Arsenal look to beat rivals to exciting Norwegian talent Sverre Nypan
Arsenal are among the clubs interested in signing Norwegian teenager Sverre Nypan, Telegraph Sport understands.
Nypan, a prodigious 18-year-old midfielder who has already made more than 50 appearances for Rosenborg in the Norwegian top flight, is regarded as one of the most talented young players in Europe.
Reports in Norway have suggested that a decision on Nypan’s future will be made in the coming weeks. Arsenal are believed to be just one of many interested clubs, with TV2 in Norway claiming that Manchester City are also looking at him closely.
Rosenborg are reported to want around £10 million for Nypan, who was drawing comparisons with Arsenal captain and fellow Norwegian Martin Odegaard at the age of just 16.
Nypan is represented by super-agent Rafaela Pimenta, who is also the representative of City striker Erling Haaland. In an interview with Norwegian outlet Nettavisen in 2023, Pimenta described Nypan as “spectacular”.
Nypan told TV2 on Friday that he is relaxed over his future amid rising interest in him.
“I don’t know – we’ll see,” he said when asked about a move in January.
“[Rumours] have been going on for a while. You don’t get completely used to it but I am starting to a little.”
In the 2024 Eliteserien season, Nypan scored eight goals in 28 matches for Rosenborg. A creative player with the ability to dribble past opponents, he has featured regularly for Norway’s youth teams.
Arsenal are hoping to strengthen their midfield in the long term amid uncertainty over the futures of Thomas Partey and Jorginho, who are both out of contract at the end of this season.
There is also long-term doubt over the future of attacking midfielder Fábio Vieira, who is on loan at Porto after falling behind teenager Ethan Nwaneri in the pecking order at the Emirates Stadium.
Alongside their interest in Nypan, Arsenal are also working on a deal to sign Spain international midfielder Martin Zubimendi at the end of this season. The Real Sociedad player, who has previously been of interest to Liverpool, has a release clause of around £50 million.
The pursuits of these midfielders are independent of Arsenal’s attempts to strengthen their attack this month.
