Arsenal and Man Utd target, Vicario alternative - Six free agents Tottenham can sign in 2025
January is going to be a very important month for Tottenham Hotspur as they target a big end to the 2024/25 season. Following a whole host of injuries and suspension issues over the past two months, it is clear to see that Spurs do need to strengthen their squad in the January transfer market.
The club did that at the start of this year after moving quickly to secure deals for Radu Dragusin and Timo Werner from Genoa and RB Leipzig respectively. Traditionally late movers in the transfer market, Spurs ideally need to be ready to move as soon as the window opens due to the lack of options at Ange Postecoglou's disposal right now.
While planning for the here and now will be Tottenham's top priority, the club could maybe also have one eye on the summer market as they will be able to talk to some players regarding a pre-contract agreement for the 2025/26 campaign and beyond. Tottenham, and their Premier League rivals for that matter, will be able to open talks from January with any player currently playing outside of the England who is in the final six months of their contract.

A great opportunity to sign players on a free transfer, Postecoglou and Spurs could even potentially secure cut-price deals in January if they wanted to bring in the player at the start of the year rather than wait until the summer. So which players will be available on free transfers at the end of the campaign as things stand right now? football.london takes a look below.
Jonathan David (Lille)
Lille striker Jonathan David looks set to be a man in demand over the coming months due to his contract status. The Canada international is once again enjoying a rather productive season in Ligue 1 after scoring goals for fun in France in his previous four campaigns.
Despite his goalscoring exploits, the 24-year-old has yet to secure a move to one of Europe's biggest leagues but that may happen in 2025. Mentioned in regards to a move to Tottenham prior to Dominic Solanke's transfer from Bournemouth, David would provide Spurs with more goals if they're looking for some more firepower and cover for their first-choice striker.
Angel Gomes (Lille)
One of David's Lille teammates, Angel Gomes, has also been linked with a move to Tottenham. The former Manchester United midfielder has really caught the eye in France and that has seen him come into the senior England fold in recent months.
Gomes can either operate as a holding midfielder, central midfielder or attacking midfielder, thus handing Postecoglou and Spurs plenty of options in the process. He could prove to be a very good midfield option if Postecoglou wants to make changes to the position in the summer.
Jonathan Tah (Bayer Leverkusen)
Spurs most definitely need to strengthen at centre-back after a host of injuries there over the past two seasons. Jonathan Tah is set to leave Bayer Leverkusen on a free transfer next summer as things stand and he would bring plenty of experience to Tottenham.
The German international also has experience of winning trophies following Leverkusen's remarkable 2023/24 season under Xabi Alonso. Tah has plenty of suitors, though, with Barcelona tipped to lure the powerful defender to Spain.
Leroy Sane (Bayern Munich)
Remaining in Germany, Leroy Sane is another big-name player about to enter the final few months of his contract. Tottenham really could do with adding more quality to their attack, with the 28-year-old able to operate on both the left-wing and right-wing.
Sane, who has indicated he would like to stay at the Allianz Arena, would prove to be an excellent addition if Spurs can secure a deal for the former Manchester City man but he will undoubtedly attract interest from a number of top clubs, including Arsenal and Manchester United who have been linked with him recently. In Tottenham's quest to hit the next level, Sane would bring plenty of goals, assists, experience and a winning mentality to north London.
Joshua Kimmich and Alphonso Davies are also on course to be available on free transfers if Tottenham fancy making a move for the Bayern Munich stars.
Alex Meret (Napoli)
As well as Fraser Forster has done in Guglielmo Vicario's absence, Tottenham need to sign a younger goalkeeper next summer as they plan for the years ahead. Alex Meret has not signed a contract extension with Napoli just yet and he will be able to talk to foreign clubs from January about a move for next season.
Spurs would look incredibly strong in the goalkeeping department if they had Vicario and Meret battling it out for the No.1 spot.
Roony Bardghji (FC Copenhagen)
Roony Bardghji came to the attention of a number of top clubs in 2023/24 following a standout season for FC Copenhagen. The right-winger has not featured this campaign due to a serious knee injury sustained at the start of May but it shouldn't be too long until he returns to the pitch.
The hope will be that the Sweden Under-21 ace can return to the high levels he was producing prior to his injury setback. If that is indeed the case, a number of clubs will be looking to lure him away from the Danish capital in a bargain deal.
