Bayern Munich forward Mathys Tel looks on his way to Tottenham Hotspur and not Arsenal this January transfer deadline day. The move is understood by football.london to be a loan, but the structure of such a deal is not yet completely agreed with the Gunners’ rivals wanting to include an option to buy in the move.

Arsenal, meanwhile, look unlikely to land any forward during the end of the window and that will come as a disappointment for many. Regarding Tel, football.london understands that while some exploration into a potential deal was made by the club, the club in the end have opted against a move.

It makes sense for the player to move to Spurs over Arsenal just from a playing time perspective. Is he better than Gabriel Martinelli, Leandro Trossard, Ethan Nwaneri or Kai Havertz? The answer is no.

Would he have offered depth to Arsenal? Almost certainly yes, especially if there are any further injury woes for the club; but we are closing on the potential return of Bukayo Saka, which could be from next month.

Arsenal have not sat on their hands, they held talks with Aston Villa over a move for Ollie Watkins. It is the understanding of football.london that those discussions led to the Gunners making an offer in the region of £40million plus add-ons for the player which was not enough to convince Villa to sell.

While a second bid was considered, so far, it appears that Arsenal simply do not feel that there is a reason to overspend on a 29-year-old striker. There has been long-term interest in Benjamin Sesko and RB Leipzig are thought to have stood firm on their ‘not for sale’ stance on the Slovenian and it would have taken a massive offer to change their minds.

The clock is ticking down this deadline day but after five goals were scored against Man City, from five different scorers, Mikel Arteta perhaps is willing to stick with what he has. They will then enact big plans for the summer and football.london understands that there is confidence that Martin Zubimendi will be one of those potential signings.
