Arsenal player ratings vs Girona as Nwaneri sparkles but Watkins bid explained by blunt attack
Arsenal progreessed to the last-16 of the competition but their rotated side were certainly tested by Girona. Two penalties, two goals ruled out, it was certainly entertaining.
Arsenal had the ball in the net in the first 10 minutes, however Riccardo Calafiori ended up being flagged rightly for offside. This mistake was punished then by a former Tottenham player as Arnaut Danjuma took advantage of some terrible Neto goalkeeping.
The Gunners hit back quickly though with Thomas Partey winning a penalty that Jorginho dispatched. Then came the wonderkid, as Ethan Nwaneri curled in an excellent strike past Pau Lopez.

Spanish football icon Christian Stuani thought he'd scored late on but saw his emotional goal ruled out by a cruel offside flag to spare Arsenal blushes.
Here is how football.london rated the performances of the Arsenal players:
Neto – Nervy moment at the beginning of the match, nearly losing the ball in his own half but was bailed out. Then was caught in no man’s land for the goal and beaten easily by Arnaut Danjuma. 4
Thomas Partey – Caught out for the Girona goal, passed inside and Danjuma able to run away from him with ease. He did in some ways redeem himself by winning a rather soft penalty kick after a foray into the box. 6
Jakub Kiwior – Question marks over the Pole’s positioning for the first goal. He did, however, recover in the game and produced some solid blocks and clearances to help in the second period. 6
Gabriel Magalhaes – Defensively the Brazilian was the consistent figure in Mikel Arteta’s selection for the game and it is little surprise as to why. A couple of headers from corners came and went and he should have arguably had a goal on the night. 7
Riccardo Calafiori – Had the ball in the back of the net but sadly timed his run too late and was flagged offside. He had a couple of shots at goal but failed to repeat his feat from the weekend at Wolves. 6
Jorginho – Calm and collected from the penalty spot as we have come to expect, the hop, skip and jump preceding a calm finish. A good game once again, as we have come to expect when the Italian is called upon. 7
Mikel Merino – Relatively quiet but consistent through the affair, progressing the play and buying very much into the approach play that Mikel Arteta wants from his team when in the final third. However, a mistake nearly proved costly toward the end as he surrendered possession. 5
Martin Odegaard – Some tricks and flicks and more importantly minutes following his absence due to illness at the weekend. But his influence on the game was again minimal. 6
Ethan Nwaneri – The special talent of this Arsenal Hale End graduate continues to be a delight to enjoy and certainly a saving grace without Bukayo Saka's vital contributions. His goal on the night was very much reminiscent of the man he is covering for, an excellent curling strike into the far corner. 8
Raheem Sterling – There was a moment in the second half where Jorginho was forced to shout at "Rash!" because of how disengaged he was at a Girona throw-in. This came after he had just back-heeled the ball off the field in a move which summed up yet another disappointing performance. He was also booked for diving and replays showed that despite a dangling leg, there was little or no contact. A penalty at the very end might have seen a slight boost to the rating but that was missed too. 4
Leandro Trossard – With Kai Havertz needing a well-deserved rest on the night, Leandro Trossard was chosen to lead the line. Skewing to the wide left and swapping with Sterling, or rather crowding perhaps, his influence on the game was kept to a minimum. Perhaps even further evidence that a signing like Ollie Watkins will be paramount in the final days of the window. 6
Substitutes -
Jurrien Timber – Replacing Thomas Partey at half-time, perhaps a pre-planned move to give both players who will be expected to start on the weekend a 45-minute period each. As usual, he was a consistent presence down the right, providing overlapping runs for Nwaneri but little more. 6
Kai Havertz – Replacing Trossard, Havertz had a few touches toward the box but, like the man he replaced, was not able to have much impact on proceedings. 5
Myles Lewis-Skelly - Came on and was not able to have much of an impact on the game. n/a
Gabriel Martinelli - Not enough time on the field to impact the game. n/a
Declan Rice - Came off the bench and was booked. n/a
