Arsenal have been knocked out of the FA Cup after being defeated by Manchester United on penalties. This will mount huge pressure on Mikel Arteta and the club who are out of a competition many had suggested they should be looking to win.

The Gunners were by far the more dominant side and ended the first half with 60% of the possession but were failing to generate meaningful chances with that – Gabriel Jesus was looking like a potential threat until what looks to be a serious knee injury took him off the field.

Bruno Fernandes would hit the Gunners with a sucker punch, however, at the start of the second half to start a manic period. First Diogo Dalot would be sent off before Gabriel Magalhaes equalised after a deflected effort.

Martin Odegaard was then given the chance to score a penalty but the well-hit shot was saved by an even better stop from Altay Bayindir. Kai Havertz would miss two golden chances, as would Declan Rice.

Here's how football.london rated the Gunners players individually in the match.

David Raya – Rarely tested in the first half, forced into a stop from Kobbie Mainoo as he struck from outside the box. He could do little about the goal as it was both unsighted and an excellent finish by Fernandes. Amazing save to deny Zirkzee in added time as a deflected effort was hit to his near-post. 7

Jurrien Timber – Was good in the first half overlapping the right wing, putting in some dangerous crosses. However, as United broke to score the opener, Timber was caught out and failed to deal with the movement of Fernandes. 6

William Saliba – Left to defend for himself after the Gabriel slip and couldn’t stop the overrun of Manchester United players. 7

Gabriel Magalhaes – Had a strong defensive first half when called upon, yet it was his slip that cost Arsenal the first goal. Thankfully, he managed to redeem the mistake by smashing in a deflected strike off Martinez for the leveller. 7

Myles Lewis-Skelly – The level of performance that this 18-year-old is producing at such a young age is quite incredible. He did make one potentially costly mistake toward the end, but overall he was strong, composed and playing a game well above his experience. 7

Jorginho – So controlled on the ball and has been making the orchestrating role his own. However, a couple mistakes early in the second half allowed the away side momentum and the goal came soon after. 7

Mikel Merino – Left me again wanting more in the first half, he is involved but there is not enough coming from that left-eight position. Made some mistakes in the second half and was replaced by Declan Rice. 5

Martin Odegaard – Certainly the best we have seen from Martin Odegaard since returning from his period of absence through illness – some nice passes through the United lines. However, the missed penalty, which was well-struck and well-saved, certainly cannot be forgotten. 6

Gabriel Jesus – Much more involved on the right-hand side than we have seen in previous games – making strong runs and combining well with Odegaard. However, his day would be ended before half-time with a very worrying injury to his knee. 6

Kai Havertz – Another massive miss from Kai Havertz right after Bruno Fernandes’ opening goal – ball drops to the German in the box and he flings a leg at it, slicing the ball wide of the United post. Won a penalty that was very soft later in the game too but sadly Odegaard could not respond.

However, the chance missed in the 89th minute was somehow even worse. It was an unbelievable chance as it fell to him to just dink over Bayindir but he put it over. He then missed the penalty to see the Gunners lose the clash. 3

Gabriel Martinelli – Full of running and energy the Brazilian, was constantly making runs for his teammates. Constantly working hard to provide crosses and inroads but lacking that final touch. 7

Substitutes:

Raheem Sterling – Some of the better moments we have seen in an Arsenal shirt as he caused Mazraoui and Martinez some real issues on the right. 6

Declan Rice – Saw a massive chance saved following an Odegaard cross he simply had to score – great save from the back-up keeper but one he needed to take. 6

Leandro Trossard – Replacing Myles Lewis-Skelly, Mikel Arteta went with a formation change. 5

Thomas Partey - Nothing of note to report. N/A

Kieran Tierney - Nothing of note to report. N/A
