Liverpool left it late and took 37 shots on goal in total, but Darwin Nunez did finally — break down Brentford and beat Mark Flekken. And it could be a huge moment in the Premier League title race.

With Arsenal playing Aston Villa in the late kick-off at the Emirates, the pressure was ramped up on Mikel Arteta's side with the news that Liverpool hadn't dropped points. Inside the stadium, as the goal alerts trickled through, the reaction was telling.

"Groans and gasps on the concourse here at the Emirates as the Nunez goals went in," BBC commentator John Murray, at Arsenal's home ground, said. "That simply means Arsenal need to follow up their very good win against Tottenham with another one."

Liverpool has been here plenty of times itself in battles with Manchester City. So often, Pep Guardiola's side would be level with half an hour remaining, only to find something out of nothing.

Equally, in the season that the Reds won the league, late goals in games, including against Aston Villa, ensured their rivals couldn't keep up. Today's Brentford result could be similar.

It won't just have been the Arsenal fans who were aware of the Liverpool result across the capital. The players in the dressing room will have been hoping for no news at Brentford until the final whistle, with a goalless draw suiting them well. Instead, Nunez put the ball back into Arsenal's court again.

Even if the Gunners do beat Aston Villa, the psychological impact of Liverpool having won late could be significant. When it looked like the Reds were going to have one of those days, Nunez made sure the narrative shifted.

Liverpool.com says: Nunez has only scored six goals all season but his brace today could be massive. Liverpool getting back to winning ways quickly and not dropping more points after disappointing results against Manchester United and Nottingham Forest was vital and it was the Uruguayan striker who made the difference.
