Mikel Arteta's history with Real Sociedad could push Arsenal to transfer-battle victory in their bid to secure Martin Zubimendi.

The 25-year-old Spanish star has become one of the most prominent defensive midfielders in football. He has been with Sociedad his entire professional career, moving his way up through their C and B team to becoming one of their most important players.

Even though Arteta already splashed £100m for a defensive midfielder in Declan Rice, the Arsenal boss is looking to deepen his choices and have further freedom in his tactical choices.

However, their venture to get Zubimendi to the Emirates has not and will continue to not be easy. Manchester City have been looking at him, but it's Liverpool who will be Arsenal's main competition. But it's the Gunners who look to have the upper hand.

The clubs involved. Arsenal and Sociedad, already have a positive relationship through the handling of Mikel Merino's negotiations. Further than that, Arteta has a personal connection with the club having played for them in the 2004/05 season.

Merino can also come into play himself. Having previously played alongside Zubimendi, he can both act as a mentor to English football, and also help the rest of the Arsenal squad to understand how Zubimendi works and plays.

The 25-year-old midfielder played a crucial part in Spain's Euro 2024 victory. His name was put in lights after he came on to replace the injured Rodri in the final where England lost 2-1.

Zubimendi's current market value sits at £50m. He did have a release clause that could have been activated last season had he said he wanted to leave.

Being a loyal supporter of the Basque club, he chose to stay for one season as Sociedad had had a series of players leave at that time.

Now, Arsenal could be in for the swoop.
