Arsenal can soon confirm new first-team addition as unpopular Mikel Arteta decision pays off
Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta is set to welcome a new player into the senior dressing room despite the January transfer window closing earlier this week. Though the Gunners were actively looking for reinforcements, particularly in attack, Arteta has not been able to add any fresh faces to his squad.
Ollie Watkins joining from Aston Villa was a real possibility in the lead up to deadline day with an opening bid, that was swiftly rejected, sent last Monday. Ultimately, the England international did not join the club he has supported from a young age with Unai Emery instead sanctioning Jhon Duran's departure.
An alternative to Watkins that was looked at earlier in the trading period was RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko. Just six months on from turning down a move to the Gunners, the possibility of loan switch with an obligation-to-buy emerged but that was ruled out by the German club.

When asked about the club not bringing in a striker, Arteta delivered a clear verdict. "We had a clear intention which is always there is a window open to explore the opportunities to improve our squad with players that can impact it," he said at a press conference on Tuesday.
"We haven't achieved it so we are disappointed in that sense but as well we are very aware that we only want to bring certain kind of players and we have to be very disciplined with that as well and I think that we will." While no new signing arrived, in comparison to the players available at the start of the season, there are two key changes.
Ethan Nwaneri and Myles Lewis-Skelly have both shone since making the jump up from the academy with both on target in the recent 5-1 win against Manchester City. The former scored back-to-back stunning goals and his displays are perhaps made even more impressive by the fact he does not see his teammates before games.
"When you see those two working next to each other, there’s a chemistry there," Arteta admitted when asked about the duo. "Ethan can’t be in our dressing room, even on matchday, so to have someone close to him, they’re lucky to have each other.”
The reason for this is because safeguarding restrictions prevent Nwaneri from getting changed in Arsenal’s first-team dressing room, as noted by the Telegraph. However, his eighteenth birthday arrives on Friday, March 21 and from that date onwards, he will then be allowed to get ready in the club's dressing room.
When Nwaneri first started getting regular minutes, calls for him to play more often were particularly significant and only increased after Bukayo Saka's injury. However, as he is still only 17, his development being managed is crucial and Arteta looks set to be rewarded for the patience shown regarding his game time.
