Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhaes has fired a message to Real Madrid star Vinicius Jr after his Brazilian teammate appeared to be the subject of a jibe from Manchester City supporters.

Prior to their Champions League playoff between City and the reigning European champions, City supporters unfurled a display which poked fun at the Madrid winger after he was pipped to the Ballon d'Or by Rodri.

It read: "Stop crying your heart out," with a picture of the Spain midfielder kissing the accolade and using the title of a famous Oasis song.

Their taunts come after the public fallout from those associated with Los Blancos after Vinicius lost out on the illustrious individual prize.

The 24-year-old was a key figure for Carlo Ancelotti's side as they picked up fifth pieces of silverware, including the league and Champions League. However, the City fan group - the 1894 - who were responsible for the banner, said that it was aimed at Florentino Pérez, the Real president, rather than Vinícius.

In a post on Instagram, the attacker wrote: "SEE YOU IN MADRID!!!!"

Among the commenters was the Gunners defender who replied: "Machine," with two fire emojis. Whether there are undertones following their recent battle with their Premier League rivals, which saw Arsenal reignite their feud with Pep Guardiola's side.

“I saw the banner with Rodri winning the Ballon d’Or, but those things give me the strength to play a great game,” Vinícius said. "They know our history, they know what we can do in this competition and here we are again.”
