Arsenal's Gabriel Martinelli is set to undergo an MRI scan after limping out of the Gunners' Carabao Cup clash at Newcastle with an apparent hamstring injury. Mikel Arteta and his players endured a night to forget in the North East, failing to mount an unlikely comeback in the semi-final second leg and ultimately losing the tie 4-0 on aggregate.

To add insult to injury, winger Martinelli was forced off during the first half and could now be set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines. “He (Martinelli) felt something," boss Arteta said after the match. "I think it was his hamstring and he wasn’t comfortable to continue. So we will have to have an MRI scan tomorrow to see the extent of the injury.”

The Gunners are already without other key attackers, with Bukayo Saka having been sidelined since December after undergoing surgery on his own hamstring injury. Gabriel Jesus, meanwhile, is set to miss the remainder of the campaign after sustaining a serious knee injury during Arsenal's FA Cup defeat by Manchester United in January.

The situation leaves Arteta with just Kai Havertz, Raheem Sterling, Leandro Trossard and the novice Ethan Nwaneri to choose from in his front three. Arsenal tried but failed to bolster its attack during the January transfer window, with the Gunners seeing a bid for Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins rejected during the final days of the window.

Speaking earlier this week, Arteta admitted his disappointment at his club's failure to land attacking reinforcements during the winter window. "We had a clear intention which is obvious," Arteta said. "There is a window open to explore the possibilities to improve our squad with players that can impact it. We haven't achieved it. So we are disappointed in that sense but as well we are very aware that we only want to bring certain kind of players. We have to be very disciplined with that as well and I think we were. I wouldn't like to go into too much detail. We couldn't do it for certain reasons and we have to accept it, that's it. It was a combination of things."
