Arsenal have been urged to shatter their transfer record by swooping for £150million-rated Newcastle United hitman Alexander Isak.

The Gunners are in the market for attacking reinforcements after being rocked by the news that star man Bukayo Saka has been ruled out for two months following surgery on his injured hamstring. Mikel Arteta's side are clinging onto their title hopes as they trail leaders Liverpool by six points, although Arne Slot's pacesetters also have a game in hand.

The North London club haven't lifted the Premier League trophy since 2003/04 and legend Paul Merson believes the capture of Swedish powerhouse Isak would significantly boost their chances of being crowned champions come May.

The two-time league winner said: "If I was Arsenal I’d go and buy Isak. I’d break the bank for him. He’s the best of the best and would take Arsenal to another level. If they can get hold of Isak, who is the best in the business at the moment, that would be a massive coup."

Isak has been in prolific form this season, rattling 13 goals in 20 games for the Magpies. And Merson boldly claimed that the 25-year-old would be a better signing than Manchester City goal machine Erling Haaland. He said: "I would have to go to Isak because of the way Arsenal play. He suits Arsenal more than Haaland."

Speaking earlier this week, Isak - who moved to St James' Park in a £63m deal from Real Sociedad in August 2022 - insisted he was relaxed over his future, with Liverpool also said to be keeping tabs.

Asked about his reported price tag, he said: "No, it doesn’t really faze me too much. I think that’s more for you guys and for fans to talk about. I’m in the middle of the season and I think it’s going really well for me and the team, so, you know, all my focus is here. I’m really happy with how things are going. My focus is on the pitch."
