What Arsenal need from Tottenham vs Man City to take control of Premier League title race

Mikel Arteta, Manager of Arsenal, reacts during the Premier League match between Manchester United and Arsenal FC at Old Trafford on May 12, 2024 in Manchester, England.

Arsenal need a huge favour from north London rivals Tottenham to win the Premier League at the expense of Manchester City. The Gunners picked up a superb victory against Manchester United on Sunday to retake top spot after Man City's dominant win the previous day against Fulham.

Next weekend the 2023/24 Premier League season will conclude and thus the title will be decided. First, though, Man City must head to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Tuesday evening with that clash having major title ramifications. Pep Guardiola's side currently sit on 85 points while Arsenal are now one point in front and also with a better goal difference by three and therefore must win on Tuesday and preferably by a considerable margin.

Spurs could also have something on the line against the reigning champions with their slim Champions League qualification hopes dependent on Aston Villa. Defeat to Liverpool on Monday will at least keep Spurs in the conversation, however, Unai Emery's side picking up three points will mean they finish fourth.

A victory for Man City meanwhile, is the only outcome that will keep them in control of the title race against Arsenal. A draw would mean both sides sit on 86 points, but Arsenal's superior goal difference would mean they remain top and thus have the advantage with them for the final day.

The Lilywhites beating Man City though, would be even better for Arsenal with that outcome meaning a victory over Everton would be enough to win the title, regardless of what Man City do. A draw however at Emirates Stadium, would leave a gap open for Guardiola's side to reach 88 points with Arsenal on 87.

With so much resting on the Spurs' clash against Man City, Arteta was asked what he'll be doing during the game. Speaking to Sky Sports, he said: "I will watch the game. I watch all the games. We need the result that is true. On top of that we have to do our jobs and everything is still at stake."

Even though the goal difference advantage is nice to have, it will likely come down to points with City able to hit a maximum of 91 points in comparison to Arsenal's 89. However, a draw at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with City and Arsenal then both winning on the final day would see the title go to north London because of that advantage, unless the reigning champions overturn a three goal deficit against West Ham.
