Arsenal 1-1 Brentford LIVE! Gunners drop points - Premier League result, match stream and latest updates today

New signing Leandro Trossard scored his first goal for Premier League leaders Arsenal but they were left frustrated as Ivan Toney secured a deserved 1-1 draw for Brentford on Saturday.

The Belgian forward replaced Gabriel Martinelli just past the hour mark with his side struggling and made an almost instant impact to convert a low cross by Bukayo Saka.

An eight-point lead in the table beckoned for Mikel Arteta’s side but they never looked comfortable against an enterprising Brentford who should have been ahead by halftime.

Toney, guilty of missing a sitter in the first half, pounced in the 72nd minute to nod in Christian Norgaard’s cross.

Despite dropping points for the second week in a row Arsenal lead the table by six points from champions Manchester City with both clubs having played the same amount of games.

Arsenal have 51 points from 21 games with City, who play Aston Villa on Sunday, on 45.

Brentford player ratings: Toney dominant as Mbeumo delivers again

17:18 , Jonathan Gorrie

Ivan Toney’s late equaliser ensured Brentford became only the second team this season to take a positive result away from the Emirates against leaders Arsenal.

Arsenal took the lead in the second half through Leandro Trossard’s close-range finish when he steered home Bukayo Saka’s cross.

But Brentford put in a performance deserving of a point and got it when Toney scored from on the goal-line when assisted by Christian Norgaard. Brentford remain in eighth place after picking up a creditable draw.

FT: Arsenal 1-1 Brentford

16:59 , Jonathan Gorrie

Gunners held to a draw by a solid Brentford team.

Another frustrating afternoon for Mikel Arteta and his team.

Brilliant Brentford defending

16:48 , Jonathan Gorrie

88 mins: Impressive stuff from the visitors but so little going forward from Arsenal in the dying embers.

Arteta makes another change

Ethan Pinnock looked marginally offside from the original free-kick there, but Brentford fans won’t care as Ivan Toney finally has a goal in this game after two bad misses. Brentford deservedly level despite a VAR check.

74 mins: That wasn’t long!

After so many good chances, Brentford get on the scoresheet! Toney nods home after a bit of pin-ball in the box.

The header survives a VAR check.

All that good defensive work from Brentford has now been undone. Toney will be particularly gutted that Trossard has put Arsenal ahead — having missed a glorious chance in each half

GOAL! Arsenal 1-0 Brentford | Leandro Trossard ‘66

16:26 , Jonathan Gorrie

The super-sub slides in from Saka’s cross at the back post to tap in.

Arsenal restoring to trying from distance

16:25 , Jonathan Gorrie

65 mins: Nketiah and Gabriel are now shooting widly from range, which says so much about where Arsenal are this afternoon.

CHANCE FOR BRENTFORD!

16:18 , Jonathan Gorrie

55 mins: Toney hits one just wide! Should be scoring from just inside the box.

Dom Smith at the Emirates Stadium

16:13 , Jonathan Gorrie

Second half has started in much more open fashion than the first period did. Odegaard and Saka denied by Raya. At the moment, Brentford are thwarting Arsenal and seeking to break away…

CHANC FOR ARSENAL!

16:13 , Jonathan Gorrie

50 mins: Some quick passing finds Odegaard drifiting into the box from a wide position and the Arsenal captain hits a lovely clean strike, albeit one not carrying a huge amount of power.

Raya saves.

Simon Collings at the Emirates Stadium

16:11 , Jonathan Gorrie

Don’t think it’ll be long before Arteta changes this. Games like this are exactly why someone like Trossard was signed. Arsenal need a spark off the bench.

CHANCE FOR ARSENAL!

16:09 , Jonathan Gorrie

47 mins: Sharp play from Arsenal as Xhaka plays Saka through, though Raya parries well from close range.

Back underway!

16:04 , Jonathan Gorrie

No changes at the break!

Trying to unlock!

HT: Arsenal 0-0 Brentford

15:49 , Jonathan Gorrie

Plenty for Mikel Arteta to ponder at half-time after a slow opening 45 minutes.

Dom Smith at the Emirates Stadium

15:41 , Jonathan Gorrie

Brentford now flooding forward at free flow. Toney took one look and forced Aaron Ramsdale to parry away. Arsenal just a little off the pace, but Brentford are certainly growing

Simon Collings at the Emirates Stadium

15:40 , Jonathan Gorrie

Home fans getting a little restless as Brentford create another chance. Arsenal then sloppy give it away moments later. They’re just not at it right now.

CHANCE FOR BRENTFORD!

15:34 , Jonathan Gorrie

32 mins: Mee wins a header from a corner and it’s seemingly goal-bound, before Arsenal clear at the last!

Brentford gaining confidence

15:31 , Jonathan Gorrie

30 mins: Thomas Frank’s side are causing all sorts of problems now, seemingly over the initial wave of Arsenal attacks.

Simon Collings at the Emirates Stadium

15:29 , Jonathan Gorrie

Arsenal’s centre-backs - who have been excellent this season - struggling - with Toney and Mbuemo. The pair are linking up excellently. Arsenal living dangerously.

Dom Smith at the Emirates Stadium

15:27 , Jonathan Gorrie

The noise from the Arsenal fans has just ramped up, not because they’re encouraged but because they’re worried. Excellent interchanging play between Toney and Bryan Mbeumo sees Toney smash the crossbar when he really ought to have scored. Brentford so nearly ahead, against the run of play

Arsenal have not been at their best

15:27 , Jonathan Gorrie

25 mins: Hardly playing badly of course but Brentford have done very well to stiffle them thus far.

Mbembou causing problems

15:23 , Jonathan Gorrie

20 mins: The Brentford forward is doing very well up against Arsenal’s centre-backs, winning fouls and corners to bring his team up the pitch.

Saka almost in!

15:19 , Jonathan Gorrie

16 mins: Nice little one-two with Odegaard frees Saka in the box as he drifts past Rico Henry, though the Brentford defender does well to put him off his shot from a tight angle.

Dom Smith at the Emirates Stadium

15:17 , Jonathan Gorrie

Once or twice in the opening stages, Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka have managed to escape in behind Brentford’s defence. The visitors are playing are back five to try and stop that happening and need to be a little less flat-footed.

Brentford have got to show more

15:14 , Jonathan Gorrie

12 mins: Early days of course but Brentford have hardly got out of their own half since Henry’s chance.

Simon Collings at the Emirates Stadium

15:12 , Jonathan Gorrie

Odegaard playing as though he’s in the mood today. He’s demanded the ball a few times and has been fizzing it into team-mates’ feet.

CHANCE FOR ARSENAL!

15:12 , Jonathan Gorrie

07 mins: Zinchenko puts one over the bar after Saka’s corner is cleared into his path.

Arsenal lucky

15:09 , Jonathan Gorrie

05 mins: Rico Henry SO close to slotting home after Toney’s brilliant cross.

Dom Smith at the Emirates Stadium

15:07 , Jonathan Gorrie

Ivan Toney is Brentford’s talismanic goal-scorer but he so nearly turned provider there, crossing early for wing-back Rico Henry who blazed over. Encouraging for Brentford that Toney was afforded that much space down the right…

Arsenal have to be patient

15:06 , Jonathan Gorrie

03 mins: Brentford have swithced to a back three as they look to frustrate the home side. Patience is key for Arsenal this afternoon.

Simon Collings at the Emirates Stadium

15:04 , Jonathan Gorrie

Barely a minute in and it’s noticeable how central Zinchenko is - he’s pretty much holding hands with Thomas Partey. Arsenal clearly keen to control possession early on.

All about how Arsenal start

15:02 , Jonathan Gorrie

01 min: Usually so strong at blowing teams away in the opening few minutes, it’ll be fascinating to see if this unchanged team can repay Arteta’s faith.

Arsenal must prove they’re no soft touches

13:36 , Matt Verri

One can only imagine the number of cuddly hearts drawn on whiteboards at London Colney this week as part of Mikel Arteta’s promise to shower his players with affection off the back of last Saturday’s defeat at Everton.

“It’s very easy to be next to the players when they’re winning and performing,” Arteta had said at Goodison Park. “These are the moments when I love my players more and my staff more and we’re going to stay together.”

The sentiment was sound from a manager who, for all his touchline outbursts, seems to possess a more measured emotional intelligence when it comes to shepherding his young squad through their more challenging moments, seen clearly in the way they managed to park what really ought to have been a scarring end to last season in time to launch such a fearless charge from the start of this, one that is yet to fizzle out.

Frank full of praise for Gunners

13:24 , Matt Verri

Thomas Frank believes his Brentford side will need to produce their “best performance” ever in the Premier League to get a result at the Emirates.

“Arteta has done a top job in building a culture over three years, making difficult decisions and sharpening a style of play,” Frank said in his pre-match press conference.

“They are also playing with that bit between their teeth, that extra edge and determination, because they can smell that they have a chance to win the league.

“You can see that they are running harder and in the duels they are giving everything. They’re so eager to win, and that makes it even more difficult to beat them.”

Brentford have already won at the Etihad this season, as well as picking up home victories over Manchester United and Liverpool, but Frank believes the Bees will have to raise their levels even more at the Emirates.

He continued: “To get anything out of this game we need to top perform. We’ll probably need the best performance we’ve ever put out in a Premier League game.”

Arteta bullish over contract talks

13:14 , Matt Verri

Mikel Arteta remains confident that Bukayo Saka and William Saliba will sign new contracts at Arsenal.

The influential duo have now become the focus of the Gunners’ efforts on that front after Gabriel Martinelli penned a bumper new four-and-a-half year deal at Emirates Stadium last week.

England winger Saka and French centre-back Saliba are both out of contract in the summer of 2024, with Arsenal having recently triggered options to extend both of their stays by an extra 12 months, along with midfield starlet Charlie Patino.

Asked on Friday if the Saka and Saliba extensions had taken care of themselves, Arteta responded: “Yeah, they will do. In the same way we dealt with Gabi [Martinelli], we’ll deal with the rest.

“Things need time sometimes but we are delighted with the news of Gabi obviously.”

Standard Sport prediction

13:06 , Matt Verri

While Brentford have caused problems for Arsenal before, going to the leaders – who have not lost at home all season in the Premier League – and winning seems a huge ask.

Toney and his team-mates may well find a way through the Gunners’ backline, but Arsenal should have enough in forward areas to pick up the three points.

Arsenal to win 2-1.

Brentford team news

12:56 , Matt Verri

Brentford are still without Thomas Strakosha, Pontus Jansson and Frank Onyeka.

Otherwise it’s expected to be a familiar side named by Thomas Frank, with Ivan Toney leading the line and Bryan Mbeumo supporting him.

Arsenal team news

12:45 , Matt Verri

Gabriel Jesus is making good progress in his recovery from knee surgery but the Arsenal striker remains sidelined.

Jesus is back in light training but Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta says it is too early to put a timeline on his first-team return.

“Gabi’s doing really well,” said Arteta. “He’s already been outside a little bit. It’s still early stages and he keeps pushing everybody every single day. We need to respect timelines and processes but he’s doing really well.”

This afternoon comes too soon for Emile Smith Rowe, who is recovering from a thigh problem. Reiss Nelson also remains sidelined.

“They have started to some activities and have been outside but they are not ready yet to contribute,” said Arteta.

Predicted Arsenal XI (4-3-3): Ramsdale; White, Saliba, Gabriel, Zinchenko; Odegaard, Partey, Xhaka; Saka, Nketiah, Martinelli.
