Arsenal vs Leicester LIVE!

Arsenal pulled level on points with Premier League title rivals Manchester City after producing a dramatic late 4-2 home win over Leicester on Saturday afternoon. The dominant Gunners appeared on easy street after totally controlling a one-sided first half at the Emirates Stadium, going in at the break 2-0 in front after the impressive Gabriel Martinelli’s first Arsenal goal since March and a further effort from the returning Leandro Trossard.

Winless Leicester hit back straight after the interval though, with James Justin’s header from a Facundo Buonanotte free-kick deflecting in off Kai Havertz. The Foxes later pulled level after a sensational volley from Justin and appeared on course for an unlikely point as Trossard hit the post and goalkeeper Mads Hermansen made a string of sensational close-range saves.

However, Arsenal would not be denied and ended up netting twice in second-half stoppage time, Trossard forcing what eventually went down as a Wilfred Ndidi own goal before a last-gasp fourth from Havertz was initially ruled out for offside before being given after a VAR check. No shortage of those ‘dark arts’ that Arsenal deployed against Manchester City last weekend being used by Leicester late on here.

Not very convincing from Raya to try and deal with that Ndidi cross.

Hermansen with some heroics for Leicester in the last few minutes, saving from Havertz’s volley and then denying Trossard after Leicester had almost caused their own downfall by playing out from the back.

My word, what a goal that is from Justin. The Leicester bunch went mad - and rightly so.

GOAL! Arsenal 2-2 Leicester | James Justin 63'

16:24 , George Flood

63 mins: What a goal and we’re LEVEL at the Emirates!

It’s another for Justin and an absolute beauty as he nails an impeccable volley in off the post from Ndidi’s cross.

Absolute pandemonium in that away end and on the Leicester bench - they’ve fought back from 2-0 down to level against the odds.

Arsenal have gone to pieces suddenly in a very strange second half from them so far.

Arsenal 2-1 Leicester

16:23 , George Flood

62 mins: This is risky stuff from Arsenal now and Arteta will be fuming.

Leicester pour forward through the middle and Buonanotte will be disappointed not to have asked more questions of Raya with a low effort that is easily saved.

Arsenal 2-1 Leicester

16:23 , George Flood

60 mins: A warning for Arsenal as talented Brighton loanee Buonanotte cuts in off the left and beats three red and white shirts before lashing off target.

Arsenal 2-1 Leicester

16:19 , George Flood

58 mins: Saka twists and turns inside the Leicester box after a challenge on Mavididi that doesn’t earn a free-kick, with Okoli making the block.

Trossard dispatches the rebound against the post! That was not an easy effort - so close to a surely all-important third Arsenal goal before the hour mark.

Arsenal 2-1 Leicester

16:17 , George Flood

55 mins: End-to-end stuff at the Emirates just at the moment as Ndidi goes down under the challenge of Saliba, but his penalty appeals are waved away.

At the other end, Havertz blasts off target before Saka rifles into the side netting.

Arsenal 2-1 Leicester

16:14 , George Flood

52 mins: Okoli has to head behind to repel a dangerous Martinelli cross as stunned Arsenal look to quickly restore their two-goal advantage.

Gabriel’s close-range header from a corner is kept out by Hermansen, who also denies Calafiori before Timber lashes over.

Arsenal, so untroubled in the first half, concede within minutes of the restart. Sloppy play all round.

GOAL! Arsenal 2-1 Leicester | James Justin 47'

16:08 , George Flood

46 mins: Finally some success for the tireless Vardy against this vaunted Arsenal centre-back pairing, with Saliba into the book for a needless shove.

AND LEICESTER HAVE SCORED FROM THE FREE-KICK!

Justin heads goalwards in front of Ndidi but it’s a huge deflection off Havertz to wrong-foot Raya.

Game on!

Arsenal 2-0 Leicester

16:06 , George Flood

The teams have returned to the pitch and we’ll be back underway at the Emirates imminently.

Doesn’t look like any changes from either side at the break.

An interesting choice from Steve Cooper given Arsenal’s total supremacy in that utterly one-sided first half.

Half-time

Complete domination from Arsenal and they are cruising at the break thanks to goals from the excellent Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard.

Leicester have been totally overawed after a bright first couple of minutes and you expect them to absorb further punishment after the break.

Arsenal 2-0 Leicester

15:51 , George Flood

48 mins: Arsenal are not content with a 2-0 half-time lead and quickly go in search of a third!

They end up with a corner that is cleared before the half-time whistle sounds.

And Leicester will be thoroughly glad to hear it.

GOAL! Arsenal 2-0 Leicester | Leandro Trossard 46'

15:48 , George Flood

46 mins: The Gunners double their lead in first-half stoppage time!

A hammer blow for Leicester on the stroke of half-time.

Martinelli the major attacking threat again as he tees up Trossard for a lovely low finish to beat Hermansen.

The least that the Gunners deserve for this dominant first-half showing.

The goal stands after a VAR check for a possible offside.

Arsenal 1-0 Leicester

15:46 , George Flood

42 mins: An extremely rare foray forward from Leicester is easily cleaned up with minimal fuss by Arsenal’s stern defence.

Vardy is cutting a very frustrated and isolated figure in that Foxes final third.

Arsenal 1-0 Leicester

15:42 , George Flood

40 mins: Saka and Martinelli are still providing a real dual threat for Arsenal as we close in on the interval, with the crowd full of wonder for a nice piece of skill by Timber.

Leicester concede another corner but Rice’s delivery is beaten away.

Vardy is getting absolutely zero change out of Gabriel and Saliba.

It's a thankless task for a forward at the best of times, let alone when you are 37.

Arsenal 1-0 Leicester

15:39 , George Flood

36 mins: It could easily be 2-0 to Arsenal as the busy Trossard digs out a cross for Havertz, who rises highest before planting a header agonisingly wide of the far post with Hermansen a spectator.

A real let-off for the visitors, who would presumably be thrilled to get in at half-time only trailing by one.

Arsenal 1-0 Leicester

15:37 , George Flood

34 mins: Saka is floored by Mavididi and Arsenal deliver a quick free-kick into the box from the right, with Leicester eventually scrambling clear and earning a pressure-relieving free-kick as an acrobatic Gunners attempt fails.

There was a good advantage played in the build-up to Arsenal’s last attack as well - fouls all over the place from sluggish Leicester, who have offered zero attacking threat so far and just can’t get a foot on the ball.

Arsenal 1-0 Leicester

15:35 , George Flood

33 mins: Martinelli the chief inspiration for Arsenal yet again as overmatched Leicester are totally overloaded and overwhelmed once more in the middle.

Skipp concedes a corner that Hermansen spills under pressure before the ball is hacked clear.

Arsenal 1-0 Leicester

15:33 , George Flood

30 mins: Ndidi slides in and catches Calafiori before promptly joining Vardy in the book.

That looked a tad harsh.

Arsenal 1-0 Leicester

15:27 , George Flood

22 mins: The pressure from Arsenal remains relentless after Martinelli’s opener - his opening goal of the season and first since March.

The Brazilian is causing Justin all sorts of problems down the Arsenal left and forces another stop from Hermansen.

Calafiori also tries his luck from range to no avail.

Arsenal 1-0 Leicester

15:25

Standard Sport’s Simon Collings at the Emirates Stadium

Both Vardy and Cooper booked in the aftermath of that goal, clearly livid the referee did not give a foul for Saliba's tussle with Vardy.

GOAL! Arsenal 1-0 Leicester | Gabriel Martinelli 19'

15:21 , George Flood

19 mins: There’s the breakthrough!

Saka comes down the right flank and ends up finding an overlapping Timber, whose low delivery is diverted into the bottom corner by Martinelli.

It wasn’t the cleanest of strikes by any means, but ended up right in the corner with Hermansen having no chance.

Leicester defenders like statues inside the box.

Vardy and Cooper are furious - they feel Leicester should have had a free-kick in the build-up.

Vardy into the book for his protests.

Arsenal 0-0 Leicester

15:18 , George Flood

15 mins: Arsenal are really turning the screw now as Saka tests Hermansen with a swerving low strike before turning provider for Martinelli, who misses the target at the back post.

This will be a long, long afternoon for Leicester if they can’t find some sort of out ball and fast.

Arsenal 0-0 Leicester

15:16 , George Flood

13 mins: Arsenal are absolutely dominating proceedings here now and are camped on the edge of the Leicester 18-yard box.

Feels like just a matter of time before they take the lead with the Foxes content to sit in, but they haven’t had an effort on target just yet.

Arsenal 0-0 Leicester

15:12 , George Flood

10 mins: A few Arsenal players in the wars early on, with Martinelli also clattered.

However, he’s quickly back up and the Gunners begin to pose a real threat down the flanks with the Brazilian and Saka.

They force a corner which Leicester manage to clear.

Here they come again quickly on the break, but Rice cleans up.

Arsenal handed incentive as Newcastle hold Man City

14:43 , George Flood

It’s all over in the lunchtime Premier League kick-off at St James’ Park, where Manchester City have dropped points again after Anthony Gordon’s penalty cancelled out Josko Gvardiol’s opener in an entertaining 1-1 draw with Newcastle.

Incentive then for Arsenal, who could go top of the league with a big win over Leicester this afternoon.

The Gunners head into the game sitting fourth and now three points behind early leaders City and three goals worse off in terms of goal difference.

Liverpool are currently second and go to winless Wolves later, while third-place Aston Villa travel to Ipswich tomorrow.

Newcastle are now level on points with Arsenal in fifth, but with an inferior goal difference.

Steve Cooper accepts Leicester fan criticism after boos

13:25 , George Flood

It is already tough times for Steve Cooper at Leicester, with no wins from his first five Premier League matches in charge and penalties needed to beat League Two Walsall in the Carabao Cup third round after an unconvincing goalless draw at the Bescot Stadium on Tuesday night.

Frustrated Foxes fans have been quick to demonstrate their ire at Enzo Maresca’s successor over recent weeks, but Cooper insists he understands their booing.

"I will always try to understand fans' perspectives and my initial reaction is not to be too defensive and see the rational of why the feeling is the way it is, and then try to do something about it,” he said at his pre-match press conference.

“Supporters pay a lot of money and every supporter's reaction is authentic and you have to respect that."

Mikel Arteta shrugs off criticism over Arsenal tactics

13:11 , George Flood

For his part, Mikel Arteta has brushed off criticism over Arsenal’s alleged ‘dark arts’ tactics and insisted yesterday that not switching up their approach would be as silly as wearing flip flops in the rain.

“I want to win, the way we prepare the games and the way we want to play, for sure, in our way,” he said.

“But understanding the context. I want to wear flip flops, shorts and a t-shirt, but with this weather? I think I would be very silly to do that. ‘I am very brave’ - yeah but tomorrow you are sick.”

He added: “That is not a debate, That is a war you cannot win, no? On this side, ‘I don’t like it’. On this side, ‘I don’t like it.’

“So where do I go? Don’t get involved in it. It doesn’t make any sense. It is very clear, you look from outside and you are not going to get involved here.”

Pep Guardiola demands clarity on cryptic Mikel Arteta comments

13:00 , George Flood

Pep Guardiola also demanded clarity from his old friend and former assistant Mikel Arteta, who had given a cryptic response when hitting back at criticism by Manchester City players of his side’s so-called ‘dark arts’ deployed at the Etihad.

"I have been there before," Arteta said. "I was there for four years. I have all the information. So I know, believe me."

Responding to those comments on Friday, Guardiola said: "Next time he has to be more clear exactly what does he mean.

"He said he was here four years and we know exactly what happened here. It can be related in all the process now with 115 charges, maybe it's about that.

"He knows information about that maybe, or maybe he has something like... I don't know.

"OK, next time, like a good relation I have with him, hopefully this question has been asked.

“He can answer exactly what does it mean when he said he was here and I know what's happening here, and instead of being in the clouds there (points upward) to be more precise."

Pep Guardiola warns Man City 'ready' for Arsenal 'war'

12:49 , George Flood

This week has been dominated by Arsenal’s injury issues and the continued fallout from last weekend’s dramatic last-gasp draw with title rivals Manchester City, which is still escalating almost a week on from a feisty clash at the Etihad.

Pep Guardiola added further fuel to the fire at a City press conference on Friday, stating that his side were ready for a “war” with the Gunners when asked about Erling Haaland throwing the ball at Gabriel’s head following John Stones’ 98th-minute equaliser.

"I would say that sometimes the emotions are so there. Gabriel said it perfectly after the match, so this is a war, we are here to provoke the opponent, to push them,” he told reporters before the lunchtime trip to Newcastle.

"At the end what can you do? OK, you provoke me - I'm there. You want a war? I'll do a war.

"What do I have to do? And after, the emotions are the emotions. I'm pretty sure he's (Erling Haaland) not proud, but listen - the type of challenge that Arsenal challenges, I understand it."

Leicester face daunting task at sun-kissed Emirates

North London is bathed in glorious late summer sunshine ahead of this afternoon’s game.

Leicester have not won here since Jamie Vardy scored a late winner in October 2020, losing all five Premier League matches against Arsenal since then.

In fact, they have won only one of their last trips to these parts, losing 22.

Arsenal vs Leicester prediction

12:20

Despite failing to win any of their five opening games of the season, Leicester have been competitive at least, with three draws and two single-goal losses.

However, even with their injury issues, the Gunners are likely to have too much for them in the end, and this should be a far more comfortable afternoon for Mikel Arteta’s side than last Sunday at the Etihad.

Arsenal team news: David Raya injury latest

12:11 , George Flood

David Raya was pictured with the rest of the Arsenal squad at their team hotel this morning, raising hopes that he could be fit to return against Leicester.

The Spaniard missed Wednesday night’s Carabao Cup rout of Bolton after being seen limping in the aftermath of that memorable clash with Manchester City, leading to a shock, record-breaking debut for 16-year-old academy goalkeeper Jack Porter with Neto cup-tied and Tommy Setford out injured.

If Raya is not ready to play today, then Neto would come in for his Arsenal debut after joining on loan from Bournemouth in the summer.

Ben White apparently was not spotted with the squad this morning, though Jurrien Timber trained yesterday after his own knock.

This game will come too soon for Mikel Merino and Takehiro Tomiyasu, with captain Martin Odegaard, Oleksandr Zinchenko and Kieran Tierney also still sidelined.

Leandro Trossard is back from suspension, while youngster Myles Lewis-Skelly is fit after being forced off with cramp in midweek.

As the fallout from their dramatic and feisty last-gasp draw with title rivals Manchester City continues to escalate almost a week later, the Gunners are back at the Emirates Stadium this afternoon following a midweek Carabao Cup demolition of third-tier Bolton.

All eyes are on the fitness of David Raya as Arsenal look to live up to their billing as heavy favourites against a struggling promoted Leicester team who are one of six top-flight sides still yet to win a single league match so far this term.

The Foxes needed penalties to see off League Two Walsall last time out as the travelling fans expressed their frustration at manager Steve Cooper.

Kick-off this afternoon is at 3pm BST, so keep it right here for all the latest team news and live updates including expert analysis from Standard Sport’s Simon Collings at the Emirates.
