Sunderland striker Wilson Isidor has offered a heartfelt apology after his double penalty miss prevented the Black Cats from jumping into second spot in the Championship.

In a remarkable finish at Turf Moor, James Trafford twice denied Isidor from the spot, first in the 86th minute and then in the sixth minute of time added on, with the Burnley faithful celebrating their eighth goalless draw of the season as if it had been a win.

Isidor was left in tears and had to be consoled by his team-mates at the final whistle after blowing two opportunities to put Sunderland above Burnley in the table. The Black Cats stay fourth after an incredible night.

Isidor, on loan from Zenit, took to social media after the game to apologise to Sunderland fans and his teammates. The forward had stood up to be counted after England Under-21 star Trafford had saved his first effort, with the second outcome incredibly similar.

He wrote: "Feels like a big slap in the face, and the worst day of my life because all of us know how I love this club. Even if only act on the pitch can make forgive, I would like to apologise to my teammates, every single fan and all the person of this club for what happened tonight.

"I feel really ashamed, but I promise you that I will come back stronger from this! See you Tuesday, HWTL. and also Big love for all messages of support from the real one."

Sunderland boss Regis le Bris refused to blame the 24-year-old and said he hoped the incident would make the player stronger. The Frenchman was also pleased with the way his side took on their Championship promotion rivals.

“He’s disappointed, like the team,” Le Bris said. “Football is like this. We have to make decisions, you make mistakes and you learn from them. That’s the best way to improve…

“We take the positives because it’s a tough place to play. We struggled for the first 20 minutes…but after that we were more aggressive, higher up the pitch and we started to dominate the game and we created five or six big chances. We can be disappointed because we didn’t score but it shows we are consistent, it shows we have good qualities and it’s a good sign for us.”
