Newcastle United midfielder Jonjo Shelvey looks set to return to England after enjoying a trial period with Championship promotion hopefuls Burnley.

Managed by a fellow former Magpies midfielder, Scott Parker, the Lancashire outfit have allowed Shelvey to train with the first-team in recent weeks as he looks for a new club following his recent Turkey release. The former St James' Park favourite was recently spotted training with Matty Longstaff at Toronto FC during the MLS side's off-season, while he has also been back on Tyneside doing individual training with north-east football coach Ryan Drane.

Parker was recently asked about signing Shelvey, replying: “It's a possibility, yeah. We'll see where we go. Maybe a little bit of training time and see what happens, but it’s certainly an area which we need to look at. But it's still very early stages.”

Burnley are currently locked in a fierce battle for second tier promotion, sitting second in the table just one point behind league leaders Leeds United. Sheffield United and Sunderland are also firmly in the mix for the title, with Shelvey potentially set to play a part in Newcastle's rivals' bid for a Premier League return.

The 32-year-old left Tyneside in 2023, admitting he had to depart in search of more game time at Nottingham Forest. Eddie Howe reluctantly sanctioned a January exit but Shelvey's time at the City Ground was extremely brief. Since then, the midfielder has enjoyed equally short spells at Turkish outfits Caykur Rizespor and Eyupspor.

‘"I never thought I’d find myself typing this out, but my time at Newcastle has come to an end," Shelvey said when leaving Newcastle. "I would just like to take this opportunity to say thank you to every one of you fans that has welcomed me and my family to the city, and to this amazing football club.

"I had been at Newcastle for seven years and it’s been the most amazing time I’ve had in football so far. I will miss the atmosphere so much. I had to take this opportunity for myself. I’ve made so many friends for life on and off the pitch while I was in your great city. Two of my children were born in Newcastle so the Geordies will remain part of our lives forever."
