Aston Villa manager Unai Emery 'identifies missing piece' as £20m transfer verdict delivered
Unai Emery has a new attacking player to bolster the Aston Villa front line, in the form of Borussia Dortmund's Donyell Malen - and BirminghamLive readers in our comments section have few complaints with the £20 million move.
Malen primarily plays on the right, and will add some competition for Leon Bailey's spot in the team as the club continue to compete in the Premier League, and maintain a strong start to their Champions League campaign. The pacy attacker found himself out of favour at Dortmund in recent times, but could be the missing piece that Unai Emery has wanted in the January transfer window.
He scored 39 goals in 132 appearances for the German heavyweights. Malen will not immediately be available for the remaining Champions League opening round games, being effectively "cup-tied", but can be registered as soon as the knockout rounds are decided.

Fans are positive about the move. Reader Metalmicky writes: “He looks like a young Gabby. Hopefully he will go on to become another Gabby.”
Commenter Coach Alex says: “Top player. Great signing. excited to see how he develops under Prof. Unai! Will give the team and fans a great boost!”
Heidivilla1608 writes: “Needed someone to compete with or replace Bailey, as Bailey has been woeful in my opinion. Exciting player on his day but loses possession far too easy of late.” Villaman agrees: “Good signing because we have suffered a long time with no winger production. Welcome and hopefully he hits the ground running!"
Kevutv thinks Malen could be the missing piece: “If he can do from the right, what Rogers does from the left, with Ginny in the middle, then Ollie and Jhon will start scoring freely. That's an attacking line up to scare most top flight defenders. Thumbs up from me.”
There are some small reservations, but nothing that can't be worked on, according to Duranduran: “Seems like a great signing with strong credentials. But let’s give him time to settle. Seems he lacks a bit of belief, coming to a new country and playing in a new league, he may take a while to adapt.”
Chosen in 1957 agrees: “Malen defiantly has the talent in wide positions to make us take the step forward into the top 6 Premier league places. He can play on both flanks but he will have the right wing as his priority. The only thing that he lacked at Dortmund was consistently in his performance levels.”
Brumy has a different concern: “They say he is quick, let’s hope our defence moves it out quicker, not square and backwards.”
