Aston Villa are set to be boosted by the return of goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez to the squad which travels to Everton on Wednesday evening as they visit Goodison Park in the Premier League for the final time.

Argentina international Martinez was an absentee as Villa progressed into the fourth round of the FA Cup at the expense of Premier League rivals West Ham United at Villa Park on Friday night, with Swede Robin Olsen deputising between the sticks for the 2-1 victory.

It emerged before kick off that Martinez had picked up a small but unspecified injury in training in the build up to the cup tie and, after assessments, it was decided by boss Unai Emery that the keeper wouldn't be risked as Villa prepare to enter another particularly busy period of their campaign.

Indeed Villa play six matches in the next 18 days, with Champions League meetings with Monaco and Celtic on the horizon before February arrives, but they're expected to have Martinez available to them from Wednesday night onwards; Villa's social media accounts have shared a photo of the keeper, braving the dipping temperatures but back in training nevertheless.

Villa's goalkeeping department more generally could undergo something of a transformation behind Martinez in the near future; Olsen, whose contract is up in the summer, has been linked with a return to Scandinavia this month. Joe Gauci, who arrived at the club a year ago this month from Down Under, could also be set for a loan in order to increase his game time. Villa have signed young Oliwier Zych up to a new deal recently.
