Aston Villa considered a move for Unai Emery's former defender Juan Foyth in the January transfer window - and the player himself has reportedly kept the door open for a move in the summer having stayed put at Villarreal last month.

Argentine Foyth, who has experience of the Premier League having previously spent time with Tottenham Hotspur, was signed by Emery when he was Villarreal boss. Within months of his arrival, Foyth had helped the La Liga club to the Europa League title at the expense of Manchester United in 2021.

The centre half, who can operate at right-back, was an option to Villa in the January window as they sought cover in that department of their squad; Villa had sold Diego Carlos and remain without Pau Torres due to injury, while Tyrone Mings and Ezri Konsa have since been struck down with setbacks, too.

The Lions did secure the signature of Axel Disasi late in the window, on a loan basis from Chelsea, for the remainder of the season, but the centre half area of the squad is expected to be spotlighted again in the summer. Villa have been uncharacteristically poor in defence lately, and conceded four at Crystal Palace on Tuesday night.

Foyth, 27, faces a key summer, indeed in his career; the Argentine has a single year remaining on his Yellow Submarine contract from this summer and, in the event he doesn't agree to extend his stay at El Madrigal the club will look to cash in and sell him in the next transfer window. They await offers for Foyth, who was reportedly tempted by Villa in January but decided to remain in Spain.

Emery said of Foyth in the winter window: “Monchi and the club are looking at different players, the profile. Of course I know Juan Foyth because I worked with him. He is one player, with his quality, he can unite and play with the qualities and the performance we want to add in the squad.”
