Manchester United earned a dramatic 2-1 win over Rangers in the Europa League on Thursday night.

Ruben Amorim's team took the lead after a mistake from former United goalkeeper Jack Butland early in the second half. The visitors then thought they had snatched a late draw after a fine finish from Cyriel Dessers followed Harry Maguire's mistake.

But Bruno Fernandes came to United's rescue in stoppage time, with Amorim's side now on the brink of qualifying for the knockout stages. The Reds sit fourth in the table with their final league phase match away at Steaua Bucuresti on January 30. United are next in action away at Fulham in the Premier League on Sunday evening (kick-off: 7pm). Below, the national media have had their say on Thursday's win over Rangers.

'Will Manchester United ever win a match in a routine manner?'

Paul Hirst of The Times wrote: "Will Manchester United ever win a match in a routine manner? Is a steady, 2-0 win not within their capabilities, even against inferior opponents?

"The answer is, of course, no. Not at this stage of life under Ruben Amorim anyway. The Portuguese knows that himself. That is why he said last week that the rest of the season would be a rollercoaster.

"This was certainly a game that fitted that description. They chuckled when Jack Butland punched the ball into his own net to give United the lead. They despaired when Harry Maguire failed to deal with a simple ball over the top in the 88th minute and Cyriel Dessers blasted the ball past Altay Bayindir."

'Yet United were again a muted bunch'

Jamie Jackson of The Guardian wrote: "Winning is the only cast-iron way to control the message in football. So after Ruben Amorim’s various recent rhetorical wrong turns this added-time, sixth victory of a chequered 16-game Manchester United reign was needed.

"On 88 minutes it seemed very far from on as Harry Maguire missed a header to enable Cyriel Dessers to steal in and equalise with aplomb. But, then, Bruno Fernandes’s late strike grabbed the points, his winner following Jack Butland’s odd, back-fisted punch for an own-goal opener that will haunt the No 1 for many a day.

"Yet United were again a muted bunch and Scotland’s second-placed team (13 points behind Celtic) should have departed boasting a famous draw with England’s record 20-times champions."

'Pointless talking about springboards'

Ian Ladyman of the Daily Mail wrote: "It is pointless talking about springboards for Manchester United. We have been here before. Every time they think they have built one they use it to dive headfirst into the shallow end with their clothes on.

"These days – during these rocky early weeks of manager Ruben Amorim – it is about avoiding calamity. About getting home with all the dressing room televisions still intact.

"And here – at the end of a pulsating extra five minutes that came on top of a very ordinary preceding 90 – this is what they did."

'Neither side was dominant'

Laurie Whitwell and Jordan Campbell of the Athletic wrote: "Manchester United are in a strong position to qualify automatically for the last 16 of the Europa League after a dramatic win over Rangers at Old Trafford thanks to a stoppage-time winner from Bruno Fernandes.

"Matthijs de Ligt headed in a United corner only for it to be disallowed after Leny Yoro was harshly judged to have fouled Robin Propper, leaving the teams level at 0-0 at the break.

"Neither side was dominant and Rangers lost three players to injury before the hour, while De Ligt was replaced at the break and Yoro on 55 minutes, but it was United who took the lead when Jack Butland punched a corner into his own goal on 52 minutes."
