Back in action at last - but Albion boss would love to have more matches
Dario Vidosic says he would love to see his Albion side play more matches.
But he hopes they have put the winter break to good use as they prepare to return to action.
The five-week break in WSL fixtures ends tonight when the Seagulls visit Liverpool (7pm).
Their resumption was put back a week when the FA Cup tie at home to Durham was called off due a frozen pitch at the Broadfield Stadium.
Albion last played on Saturday, December 14, when they drew 1-1 at home to Tottenham.
For context for those who also follow the men’s team, that was the day before Crystal Palace won at the Amex.
It is not ideal for momentum, be it players and teams or in getting more fans into the routine of attending games.
But there can also be benefits to the break.
Vidosic has spent his first family Christmas in England, having been used to festive seasons in the heat of Australia.
But he will have noticed the busy time the men’s game has had at all levels.
As the women’s game expands, one can imagine this time of year could be a period where there is room for extra games.
But, rather than asking the usual question about whether there are too many games, it felt more appropriate to ask the Albion women’s head coach whether there are not enough.
Vidosic told The Argus: “If you ask me personally, I would love to play more games. I think everyone would.
“The fans, the players, the coaches, we would love to play more games. I think that’s a definite.
“If we didn’t have to have the break, it would be nice to continue to play.
“But it’s also I think good to have that recovery as well for the players after quite a short, intense pre-season and then into the season.
“There is a lot of competition and travel.
“So it is maybe not the worst thing. The players can recover, especially because the injuries are a lot higher in those longer, maybe the ACLs, in the women’s game.
“Hopefully they are trying to solve that one as well.
“So it depends which side you are looking at it from.
“But I think for me personally and players, they would love to be out there, they love to play games.
“If we could have more, it would be fantastic.
“At the moment, we are where we are.
“The strides and how far the women’s game has progressed in such a short period, I think it’s fantastic.
“The only way is up and I wouldn’t be surprised if we are just going to continue to grow and grow at a rapid speed.”
Albion have put their time to good use and are now anxious to get back to action.
Vidosic said work on the training pitch had been thorough and added: “More so on those smaller details that can make the big differences.
“We have worked on all phases with the ball, without the ball, in term of preparation for Durham and now also for Liverpool.
“Taking into account the opponents’ strengths and weaknesses and how can we play our football and what we want to do there.
“It has sort of been a mixture of our development, individually and as a team, and also the opponent as well.
“Into this second half of the week, we turn our attention now a little bit more to Liverpool and how we can prepare for Friday.”
Albion are currently fifth, four points off the top four and six ahead of the pack, going into the final round of fixtures in the first half of the season.
They have a big date in midweek as they host Arsenal in the League Cup quarter-finals at Crawley on Wednesday (7pm).
They go to Manchester United next Sunday and the next home league game is versus Crystal Palace on February 2.
The FA Cup tie against Durham has been re-arranged for the following Wednesday, January 29.
