Badou Jack's first fight in 2 years, Janibek Alimkhanuly's Kazakhstan homecoming targeted for April title bouts
Badou Jack's upcoming WBC cruiserweight mandatory title defense against Ryan Rozicki received just one bidder at a purse bid auction Wednesday: Three Lions Promotions.
The Canadian promotional company, which represents Rozicki, won the purse bids with a $320,000 offer. Although an official date and location have yet to be confirmed, Three Lions Promotions indicated to Ring Magazine, which first reported the news, that it is looking to stage Jack vs. Rozicki in Canada in April.
Jack (28-3-3, 17 KOs), a three-division world champion, hasn't boxed in almost two years. His most recent in-ring appearance came when he won the WBC cruiserweight championship with a 12th-round stoppage win over Ilunga Makabu in February 2023.
Jack, 41, was made champion in recess in late 2023 after confirming plans to challenge for the WBC bridgerweight title, however his quest to become a four-division champion failed to materialize, and Jack was reinstated as WBC cruiserweight champion this past December.
Rozicki (20-1-1, 19 KOs), a hard-punching Canadian, has remained unbeaten in his past eight fights since dropping a unanimous decision to Oscar Rivas in 2021 for the WBC bridgerweight belt. In his most recent outing, Rozicki, 29, fought to a draw against Yamil Alberto Peralta, whom he previously defeated by split decision.
Janibek Alimkhanuly next title defense confirmed
Unified middleweight champion Janibek Alimkhanuly will defend his IBF and WBO titles against Anauel Ngamissengue on April 5 at the Barys Arena in Astana, Kazakhstan, Nomad Promotions confirmed on Wednesday morning. The bout serves as a homecoming for Alimkhanuly, who hasn't fought in his native Kazakhstan since 2017.
Alimkhanuly vs. Ngamissengue will stream on ESPN+ in the United States in the late morning/early afternoon. It is expected to be the first of two boxing events on ESPN+ on April 5, with Top Rank also planning a card at the Pearl Theater in Las Vegas later that day, which could be headlined by the Zaur Abdullaev vs. Raymond Muratalla IBF interim lightweight title bout.
Alimkhanuly (16-0, 11 KOs) was upgraded to WBO world champion in 2022 after Demetrius Andrade moved up to super middleweight. The Kazakh has made four successful defenses of his belt, including a sixth-round knockout of Vincenzo Gualtieri, which saw him add the IBF crown to his collection.
Ngamissengue (14-0, 9 KOs), a little-known Frenchman originally from Congo, upset Polish contender Fiodor Czerkaszyn on the Oleksandr Usyk vs. Daniel Dubois undercard in 2023. He was originally announced as part of a tournament Eddie Hearn's Matchroom Boxing was staging in 2024 in Japan, but once the competition was postponed to a later date, Ngamissengue's name was missing from the lineup.
Alimkhanuly will enter his fight with Ngamissengue as a heavy betting favorite. The middleweight champion has struggled to land the marquee fights he desires since winning the titles, with Hamzah Sheeraz — who Alimkhanuly was mandated to face — choosing to challenge WBC champion Carlos Adames instead, and promotional politics serving as obstacles to unification contests.
