Banished Newcastle United figure on standby for Southampton clash after recall
Former Newcastle United star Ryan Fraser has been called in from the cold by Southampton boss Ivan Juric.
It was only in July that Fraser reported to Little Benton, after being sent to train with the reserves, that Fraser was still on Newcastle's books. His transfer was delayed until the latter stages of the summer window after the Scotland winger and the Magpies haggled over his contract before his deal was terminated early.
Fraser, who helped the Saints to promotion in 2024, has since endured a mixed return to the South Coast club and after finding himself in and out of Russell Martin's squad before the ex-Norwich star was shown the door, Fraser has been thrown a second chance from Juric.

Fraser was an unused substitute in the 3-2 loss to Nottingham Forest at the City Ground on Sunday in the Premier League. After talk that the 30-year-old had fallen out of favour but Juric said: "I think that Fraser is a really good player. He worked hard. He plays in the same position as Kamaldeen Sulemana, like Adam Armstrong. That's what penalised him."
Newcastle were in no hurry to push through Fraser's transfer last August ahead of the opening game of the season at St James' Park. A narrow 1-0 win, with Joelinton scoring the goal, unfolded with Fraser stationed at home while the outgoing deal was put on ice. But he will be in the squad to face his old club for the first time this weekend.
After signing for the Saints, Fraser, who did fall out of favour under Eddie Howe in 2023, said: "I'm probably the happiest man in Southampton at the minute. It's been a long summer from the play-off final to now, but my number one goal was to get back here and now that it's happened, it's one of my proudest moments to be honest."
Howe said in March that year: "Ryan’s training with the Under-21s. I made the decision to concentrate on players that are committed to Newcastle. For the benefit of the group, I’ve made that call."
Under a new coach, Fraser gets another opportunity to shine on the Premier League stage, albeit with the Saints deep in the mire sitting rock bottom on six points.
