Barcelona are reportedly preparing a plan to keep hold of Dani Olmo if they are unable to re-register him this winter - but it would open the door for Manchester United to swoop in.

Olmo has been the centre of a media storm in recent weeks after La Liga blocked attempts by Barca to re-register him for the remainder of the season after they failed to meet the requirements of their Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules. Before the new year, Barca had suggested they were confident of re-registering Olmo after they agreed an £83m sponsorship deal for VIP boxes at Camp Nou once it reopens.

Despite this, La Liga took Olmo off their website, suggesting that the plan to re-register him has not yet worked. The player's agent, Andy Bara, has insisted his client is committed to remaining at Barcelona and that he is not interested in negotiating with any other club at this stage.

However, this could be taken out of his hands should La Liga continue to block Barca. As such, the European giants are now putting together a plan to keep hold of Olmo should La Liga stop him from being registered.

According to Sport, the plan would be to cancel the contract of Olmo and then sign him up to a new deal that would begin on July 1, 2025. The hope from Barcelona's side would be at that point, they will have got their finances in order and could incorporate him back into their squad list.

In the meantime, Olmo would be a free agent, allowing him to sign for whoever he wishes for the remainder of the campaign. This plan opens the door for United to seal a short-term deal for the attacking midfielder, albeit with the caveat that they would lose him at the end of the season.

But, with United currently needing all the reinforcements they can get and their budget non-existent, bringing in a player of Olmo's calibre would be a huge boost, even if it is only temporary.
