Royal Wootton Bassett defeated local rivals Marlborough 20-12 in a close match that survived the cold spell that swept the country.

The match had looked in doubt but the slightly warmer temperatures than forecast meant the frost had come out of the ground well before the scheduled start.

Bassett kicked off and immediately went on the attack. The first 20 minutes saw Bassett have virtually all the possession and territory. However, determined defence from Marlborough time and again snuffed out the Bassett attack.

Marlborough were then able to turn the tables and had an excellent spell using their set scrummage to set up a sequence of attacks on the Bassett line. The Bassett defence was up to the task and their was no way through.

In the 30th minute, a penalty in front of the posts saw Rhys Floyd strike the opening score. The rest of the half continued to be tight but Bassett led 3-0 at the interval. Both defences had been on top in the first period and both sides must have felt the game was winnable.

Marlborough started the half the better and put the Bassett line under pressure. Sione Matakaiango cut through the defence shortly after the break to score a try he converted himself.

Bassett were fighting back and looking dangerous when Marlborough were quickly hit with two yellow cards in two minutes. Bassett took full advantage with Charlie Hix scoring from a close-range lineout. Floyd converted and Bassett restored their lead.

Even after Marlborough were restored to full strength Bassett were creating plenty of chances. Bassett were throwing the ball around and a fast move saw Ollie Baycroft join the line and break the defence before being caught two metres out. The ball was recycled and fed to winger Jamie Murray who made no mistake.

Marlborough now needed two scores to get a result. A good attack in the 78th minute was rewarded when winger Wate Kuli went over for an unconverted try.  Almost immediately Bassett were awarded a penalty and Floyd slotted it to seal the 20-12 victory.

Bassett will be well pleased to have completed the double over their nearest league rivals in an exciting game with both sides giving their all in a game of high quality. Bassett now travel to the Forest of Dean to face fifth placed Lydney, who won the corresponding match at Ballards Ash earlier in the season.
