Leeds United were handed a major boost in their promotion push thanks to their win over Sheffield United.

Daniel Farke, who was sat in the stands at Bramall Lane as he served a one-match touchline ban, guided Leeds to a 3-1 win over the Blades on Monday night in the Championship. United now have a five-point lead at the top of the table and a seven-point advantage in the automatic promotion places.

Leeds now have 12 Championship matches remaining to secure promotion back to the Premier League. United were trailing the game after an Illan Meslier own goal, but second-half strikes from Junior Firpo, Ao Tanaka and Joel Piroe secured the victory against their promotion rivals. Here, Leeds Live takes a look at how the national media reported on United's win at Bramall Lane on Monday night.

'In an extraordinary finale'

Ian Whittell wrote for The Times: "Not even the latest in a long string of errors from Illan Meslier could knock Leeds United off the top of the Championship as Daniel Farke’s side took what looked like a decisive step back towards the Premier League.

"In an extraordinary finale the visitors scored twice in the last two minutes of normal time to stamp their authority on the title race, let alone the chase for automatic promotion in which they now enjoy a seven-point cushion over Burnley in third.

"As if Leeds did not have enough going in their favour, after this Saturday’s home meeting with West Bromwich Albion, of the 11 games they have remaining only Bristol City are in the top ten of the division. And by the time they visit Elland Road for Leeds’s final home game of the season, it will be a huge surprise if Farke has not already clinched promotion."

'Things started anxiously'

Dominic King added for the Daily Mail: "The shot was unstoppable and so, it seems, are the team. Joel Piroe's left-foot drive didn't just rip into Sheffield United's net, it probably tore the heart from Leeds' nearest pursuers.

"What a way to end an absorbing game of football, a strike so clean that it was combination of beauty and brutality, like the definitive punch in a title bout that sends the beaten fighter spinning through the ropes. Nothing is going to stop Leeds going the distance.

"Things started anxiously for them at Bramall Lane, as the locals created a furnace and Leeds's goalkeeper Ilan Meslier looked riddled with nerves, but by the end, the visitors were singing how they will be 'champions again' as the scoreboard showed the result was 3-1 in their favour."

'The night Leeds United’s season swung decisively'

Aaron Bower concluded for The Guardian: "The night Leeds United’s season swung decisively, or just another evening in the most unpredictable league in football? Only in May will we know that answer for sure, but the scale of the celebrations from those associated with Leeds here perhaps told you everything you need to know.

"The popular song aimed in Leeds’ direction when things are going wrong is to decry that Daniel Farke’s side are falling apart. But here, when it mattered most, this team showed that they are anything but one that capitulates in the crucial moments.

"It looks increasingly like this club and their manager will again be a Premier League side next season. Last week, they dug deep at Elland Road to score twice late on and overturn a losing position against Sunderland. That was monumental, but this was on another level and has ramifications for the whole promotion race, not just Leeds."
