Leicester City Fan View: Ben Chilwell making the most of a starting role

Claude Puel kept the faith in the majority of the side that saw off Tottenham midweek. Only Demarai Gray came in for Shinji Okazaki. It was a well fought contest but despite being tough in parts, Leicester City looked largely comfortable. The win made it seven points from nine and firms up our place in the top ten. The Foxes are on the rise under Puel. As our some of youngsters; Ben Chilwell deservedly kept his starting place and continued to impress.

Ben Chilwell making a solid case to be the starting left-back

Deputising for Christian Fuchs, on paternity duties, Chilwell played well midweek against Tottenham. The young left-back had earned his place in the side to face Burnley. It will be tough for Fuchs to get that spot back too; Chilwell has played an important role in both victories. It’s easy to forget he’s not played that position for us more regularly with the way he slots right in.

He’s an incredibly assured looking defender for one so young. Brimming with confidence, he’ll be enjoying a big nod of confidence from our new manager. He’s been on the fringes of breaking through on a more permanent basis, but this week has been a big one for the England Under 21 player. Burnley made for a different type of opponent, but no less challenging. For Chilwell, it was another game under his belt and a clean sheet to boot.

If there’s room for improvement in Chilwell’s game, much of it comes from his attacking play. He’s an attacking minded full-back, capable of playing the wing-back role or pushing into midfield. His final balls into the third are yet to fully match the confidence or ability displayed when pushing forward. Much of this will come with experience and with more regular playing time. It makes for an exciting prospect. We haven’t been able to produce our own defensive talent in a while.

Chilwell isn’t the only one taking full advantage of Puel’s plans to play our young players more. Demarai Gray has enjoyed more match minutes in Puel’s reign so far than under any other manager. Much like the left-back, he’s not short of confidence and that will continue to develop as he gets more experience too. Occasionally his decision making still lets him down but generally this was spot on yesterday.

Notching the winning goal, and suffering some pain for it too, he’ll be pleased with his season so far. We saw a different side to the winger this weekend too. We’re used to Vardy diving in to push the ball out for a throw-in when we’ve lost possession. It’s not something so associated with the youngster though, but he got the crowd going by doing so against Burnley. That kind of team play is what endears fans to players. As Puel’s already said, Gray is being shaped to be the Mahrez of our future.

Gray wasn’t the only player deserving of praise. There’s an argument for each of our players due to the solid team performance. Marc Albrighton was on the opposite wing to Gray. Back in his favoured position, he’s had two superb back to back games. Just remember that this is also a player who cost us nothing. The grit and effort you get from him each game are priceless.

There was yet another commanding performance from Vicente Iborra, allowing Wilfred Ndidi to look back at his best too. A clean sheet was well deserved for the beast of a performance from Harry Maguire and equally, Wes Morgan. Puel was patient in bringing on a substitute. When he did, Shinji Okazaki was dynamic and just when we were looking like slowing, helped speed us back up.

Blondes have more fun?

There were a lot of talking points after the game but one in particular took over. Riyad Mahrez’s bleached blonde hairdo. Whether or not it distracted the Burnley players as much as it did us I’m not sure. The Algerian certainly enjoyed himself in the match though, playing to the stereotype that blondes have more fun.

Straight off the back of a glittering performance against Tottenham, with a beautiful goal to boast, the winger caused more problems yesterday. Mahrez was unlucky not to add a goal for himself, one that would have likely killed off the Northern side. The only piece of the Algerian’s game that left a little to be desired yesterday was his set pieces. In general, we still need to be consistently better at both taking and defending them though.

A cynical fan would suggest Mahrez is hitting previous heights in a timely manner. He certainly looks happy though at the Foxes currently. Long may that, and his return to form, continue. Puel has got the side purring, some of the football we’ve witnessed has been a delight. With his management, we look to be heading in the right direction.
