Benjamin Sesko to Arsenal transfer latest - Major stumbling block, loan refuted, four alternatives
Arsenal have less than two weeks left to add attacking reinforcements to Mikel Arteta's squad as they struggle to chase a relentless Liverpool side at the top of the Premier League table.
Arteta is believed to be actively pursuing the idea of bringing in a No.9 or attacking wide player for the Gunners but is working with limited options in the winter transfer window. However, Arsenal still hold an interest in RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko who they were heavily linked to in the summer.
No move materialised then, with Arteta deciding to put his faith in Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz to lead the line - particularly after the latter's performances at the tail end of last season where the makeshift striker managed nine goals and six assists in the closing 13 Premier League games.

This season, injuries to Bukayo Saka, Jesus and other attacking players such as Ethan Nwaneri, seem to have forced the Spanish head coach's hand as he hunts for a striker. The Gunners are linked with Sporting CP forward Viktor Gyokeres, but face competition from Manchester United and from around Europe, while deals for Dusan Vlahovic and Matheus Cunha seem far away. Sesko could be the one to sign.
What is the latest on the Sesko deal?
The Slovenian has been in familiar fine form for Leipzig this season, scoring 13 times in 25 outings in all competitions - including netting eight times in 17 Bundesliga games. A major sticking point for any potential deal is that, off the back of Arsenal's aforementioned interest this summer, the 21-year-old signed a new deal at the Red Bull Arena last summer.
football.london understands that Arsenal's interest in Sesko is genuine, with the Gunners still keeping an eye on the player despite not bringing him to North London last summer.
With four-and-a-half years remaining on Sesko's current contract, prising him away from the Bundesliga may prove to be too costly this month - with the approaching window deadline also making things all the more unlikely. Leipzig will want to ensure they have a replacement for any first-team departures, Sesko included, before agreeing to any sales.
A permanent deal looks tricky to complete in the final days of the window, and there have been suggestions of an initial loan deal, but football.london understands that is not true.
What are the main stumbling blocks?
As mentioned, the decision to sign a fresh contract in the summer was made to fend off potential suitors for Sesko as Leipzig hope to maximise their financial incentives when it comes to player sales.
Yet, due to his impressive form, Arsenal, and other clubs in Europe, continue to monitor the six-foot-five striker's situation with vested interest. The Independent has reported that the Gunners are aware of a potential release clause for the player but it is understood this is not active during the present transfer window.
The February 3 transfer deadline is less than two weeks away for both Arsenal and Leipzig. Any potential acquisition will only increase in value as any transfer saga drags on.
If Arteta is to bite the bullet and try to land Sesko on a permanent deal then it might take some convincing to persuade the club's owner, Stan Kroenke, to part with a substantial amount of cash to do so. The club finds itself six points adrift of league leaders Liverpool, who have a game in hand and are out of both domestic cup competitions.
A major signing, with a hefty price tag, might be the pick-me-up Gunners' fans need to continue to back Mikel Arteta as it looks to be a fourth season without a major trophy.
Who else could Arsenal try to sign?
Arteta's side have been linked with a host of strikers from across Europe and fellow Premier League clubs - including some of the names mentioned above.
A deal for Gyokeres seems more than unlikely with several clubs touted to begin a bidding war for the Swede's services. Meanwhile, Vlahovic has experienced patchy form for Juventus in the Italian club's topsy-turvy undefeated league run, this season.
Closer to home, Cunha's impressive season for Wolves has attracted the interest of multiple English clubs - including Arsenal. The attacker has 10 goals and four assists in the Premier League so far and Sky Sports has reported on the interest from the Gunners. Wolves, like any other Premier League club, are on a healthy financial footing so, unless Cunha insists on a move to the Emirates Stadium, this potential transfer will likely face the same expensive challenges for Arteta - and a loan move is off the table as Raheem Sterling and back-up keeper, Neto fill both domestic loan slots for Arsenal.
Elsewhere, Alexander Isak has held the club's attention for some time now and his 15 league goals this season have only piqued interest. But, Newcastle are unlikely to be brought to the negotiation table this month though they could be in the summer as the Swedish striker only has 18 months remaining on his contract.
