Beto drops fresh Everton transfer hint as one word sums up biggest change under David Moyes

Beto is out to prove he can cut it in the Premier League - but insists he alone won’t be the solution to Everton’s goalscoring woes. The forward scored twice as the Blues thrashed Leicester City 4-0 on Saturday afternoon to climb further away from the relegation zone.

It was the first time the former Udinese Calcio man had scored twice in the same game for the Blues since he moved to Goodison Park from the Serie A side in August 2023. Beto has endured mixed fortunes since moving to Merseyside, and it is no surprise that he has been repeatedly linked with a move back to Italy during the winter window.

But as the only currently fit centre-forward at the club, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Armando Broja and Youssef Chermiti all sidelined due to injury, the 27-year-old is determined to make his mark and show he has what it takes to play in the Premier League.

He said: “I feel really good and feel really pleased. It is always good to score in the Premier League, and to score two goals is really exciting.

“I am really happy for the team's performance. It was perfect. We had a clean sheet, we fought for every ball, and we keep going.

"It was a really hard year and a half. I just put in my mind that if I keep working and keep myself prepared, the opportunities will come.

"I showed (against Leicester) that I am prepared to play in the Premier League. I know I can play in the Premier League, and I know I can improve.

"This game will give me confidence and give confidence to the team. It is always good to score in the Premier League, and to score two goals is really exciting.

"The chances will come, but if you are not prepared when the chance comes, then it doesn't make sense, so I just put it in mind to keep myself prepared.

"I don't think I will be the answer (to Everton's goalscoring problems); I think we (the team) will be the answer."

Everton were the lowest scorers in the Premier League bar Southampton when Moyes replaced Sean Dyche three weeks ago, but under the Scot, the Blues have scored eight in their last three matches.

A third successive victory since the return of Moyes also moved the Blues nine points clear of Ruud van Nistelrooy’s side in the table, with the Scot re-energising a team that had lost its way in the final few months of Dyche’s tenure.

And when asked about the biggest change since Moyes came in, the forward replied: “I think the mentality. The mentality of the team now is that we put ourselves in situations that we want to win games, and the gaffer always speaks with us in terms of we have quality and we need to play with our qualities. The boost of confidence that he gave us is really, really good and really important.

“I will not say that the previous manager didn’t want to play and didn’t want to create chances, but it is a different type of football.

“We now have confidence to play, and we are playing, and we are showing people that we are capable of doing a good run and a good season.”

Beto departed to a standing ovation from those in attendance at Goodison, and reflecting on the reception he received, he said: “It was amazing.

“As I said before, guys like me, to get everybody singing my name is amazing and a boost of confidence. I was so pleased, and I am so thankful to them.”
