Bidders on bonding, brilliant new archive and what 'still rankles' with Coventry City legend
Excitement is building among Coventry City fans as they eagerly await news on the club’s attempt to sign Swansea midfielder Matt Grimes as we move well into the final week of the January transfer window.
Sky Blues fans are also hoping that other players will be added to strengthen Frank Lampard’s side before Monday’s deadline, with the head coach having previously stated he’d like to provide “help” on the wings amid the on-going injuries to key wide players Ephron Mason-Clarke and Haji Wright.
Although the window has been pretty quiet for the Championship club so far, it’s expected to be a busy final few days of trading. In the meantime, here we take a look at what else’s going on in and around the club with our latest diary notebook.

Bidders on bonding
Jake Bidwell insists you can go on as many team bonding jollies as you like but nothing beats that winning feeling when it comes to forging a spirit in the dressing room.
“I have said before, that spirit you get, there is nothing like winning games to produce that,” he said. “You can go to as many socials, go-karting, whatever it is, team bonding, there is nothing like coming through those last minutes (on the pitch), when everyone is grinding it out together, and weeks like this (against Watford).
“We have had good weeks and nothing produces team spirit like that. You can go back to the cup game, the way we won the cup game was massive. People might say it was only the third round of the cup, but these things are massive to help us build momentum.”
Still rankles all these years on
Micky Gynn was a Coventry City favourite for ten years and a genuine Sky Blues legend after his all-action contribution to Wembley ’87 – but his departure from Highfield Road left a bitter taste which still rankles three decades on.
Now 63 and a regular in the CBS Arena press box, Gynn looks back at the highs and lows of his career in the new edition of retro football magazine Backpass.
Speaking to David McVay, the ex Notts County midfielder who reinvented himself as a Fleet Street columnist and author of off-beat football books like Steak Diana Ross, Gynny recalls how he was promised a testimonial match by Terry Butcher before being released by his replacement Bobby Gould in 1993.
“The chairman was Bryan Richardson and I asked him about my testimonial. He just told me he didn’t have the time to deal with it, the club had other more pressing matters. After ten years and the FA Cup, I just thought it was a lousy way to treat a player.
“I told them I would seek legal advice because Terry had put that clause in my contract. I reckon they had a copy of it so in the end they said I could have one but still the chairman refused to see me or grant me a game. It took me 12 years to have my testimonial.
“It did sour me with the club then, not the fans. I go today for games and they always stop and have a chat. But the board and the club were a disgrace, the way they treat people when you are trying to do the best for yourself and your family. They weren’t bothered one bit about me.”
The three-page feature on Gynn is included in Backpass No.91, available now from www.backpassmagazine.co.uk or from any WH Smith high street store.
Rabbi’s next move
With Frank Lampard still to get his first transfer over the line, City’s bid to draft in Rangers’ wide man Rabbi Matondo has bitten the dust.
According to a new update from Rangers News, Ligue 1 side Nantes have now made an approach for the Welsh winger whose move to the CBS Arena broke down last week amid reports of issues over bonuses.
The French side are now said to be ‘eyeing’ a loan deal until the end of the season. The £23,000-a-week Matondo has really struggled to make an impact at Rangers this season, starting just twice in the league and making only six appearances in the competition in total.
Under-21s progress in Cup
Coventry City's Under-21s kicked off their Birmingham Senior Cup campaign with a 1-0 win over Stourbridge on Tuesday night, with Elliot Betjemann scoring the decisive goal for the Sky Blues. They will now face Dudley in the hird round of the competition.
