'We need big club mentality' Holloway wants pressure to succeed
Ian Holloway wants to instil the pressure of having a “big club mentality” and demanding success back into Swindon Town.
Since his arrival at the club in late October, Holloway has overseen a transformation on the pitch which has seen them turn early fears of a relegation dogfight into the hopes of being upwardly mobile in the final months of the campaign.
Swindon have won four and drawn two of their last six matches and Holloway is hoping to continue to drive that momentum.
Following a draw with promotion-chasing Port Vale last week, Town’s manager said that he wanted to create a “big club mentality" which he felt was missing when he arrived.
He said: “I feel as though there is pressure on everybody and you can see that with the way that they are listening to me.
“For me, without having someone who is as good as you if not better challenging you then you are never going to be as good as you can be.
“That is the challenge that we want to be a big club because we are a big club.
“But we didn’t have a big club mentality and now all I want is for them [the players] to do that and to keep going.
“I am not happy with a draw, I want to win at home, and that has put the pressure on us next week away against Harrogate. Can we go away and win?”
Holloway added that he believed in forcing Port Vale to be at their best to earn a point at The Nigel Eady County Ground, Swindon had shown where they could go.
He said: “We are gradually getting to where I want us to be.
“That is 71 minutes for Tom [Nichols] in his 500th game, he hasn’t scored yet but that doesn’t matter, I told you that I needed him to do things.
“Overall I am really pleased and I feel that we have come a long way because I have always been worried about us going backwards, you have those dreams at night about whether it will be that bad again.
“I am haunted by Colchester but hopefully it won’t be that bad again and I am pleased with that.
“I am pleased with the atmosphere that the crowd created because they are seeing the team compete and fight for everything, they were trying to bully us and we were fighting them off.”
