The big demand Newcastle United players were given by Paul Mitchell in first ever meeting

Newcastle United sporting director Paul Mitchell has lifted the lid on his first ever meeting with Eddie Howe's squad and spoken about the message he gave them on day one.

The former Monaco supremo arrived in July and told Toon stars he was aiming high and wanted the Magpies to have "super ambitions" to kick on from last season's seventh placed finish. That resulted in no European football for Newcastle this term and the first aim for Newcastle this term is to retain their slot in continental competition.

Mitchell, speaking to fans at the STACK, said: "The message I gave the players when I came into the building was it was about going from good to great. We have super high ambitions.

"We have super high ambitions in terms of ownership and super high in terms of directorship and a super ambitious coach. I think with these fans in particular deserve success and that has to be the primary objective so we have to move forward and have to be aggressive."

Mitchell's arrival resulted in suggestions that he would have a say on Howe's style of play with previous quotes from his Monaco days attributed in newspaper reports. But he insisted he was delighted with the way Howe has his team set up right now.

Mitchell said: "I love the style of play because I think it mirrors us as a club and a fanbase. And what we expect."

The former Tottenham and RB Leipzig chief now wants Newcastle to get on the front foot off the field of play too. He said: "We have to do that off the pitch as well, we have to grow each department, it is my job to maintain collaboration with Eddie to do that.

"We have to work as hard as we can for as long as we can in an intelligent way to progress and be competitive at the top end of the Premier League where we want to be and get ourselves back into Europe and start enjoying European nights here in this fantastic stadium."
