Birmingham City face a big few days in their bid for promotion from League One – with in-form Leyton Orient visiting St Andrew’s @Knighthead Park this evening – and second-placed Wycombe to come on Saturday.

While Chairboys boss Mike Dodds’ return to the club where he spent many years as a coach in the academy will be significant on a personal level, the game could be much more significant on a wider basis.

Indeed it pivotal into deciding whether Blues have a downhill stroll towards a Championship return, or whether the denouement is rather more tense. If Chris Davies side extend their lead at the top back to nine points tonight, they could be 12 clear with a game in hand by Saturday afternoon.

However, as things stand they still need another 34 points to be sure of the going up – from 16 games – at a rate that means there is still plenty of work to do in the coming weeks. They need to continue averaging two points a game for at least the next month.

All eyes are on third placed Wrexham who can still amass 103 points from their remaining 14 matches – including one against Wycombe on March 15. Obviously failure to win at Adams Park also reduces Blues target. A draw means Blues potentially need to beat 101 points and require another 32.

Of course all this presupposes that Wrexham keep winning and while that’s not impossible, neither is it likely and if they do rattle off 14 successive victories, they’ll deserve to go up.

Blues will need a minimum of 12 more matches to amass another 34 points, which depending on when the Blackpool game is rearranged, could mean the race continues right until the end of April.

Over the last ten years the average to secure promotion has been just over 87 points. Blues need 37 points to be sure of the title.
