Birmingham City are facing up to a midfield crisis after Marc Leonard and Taylor Gardner-Hickman joined Paik Seung-ho in the treatment room.

Leonard was forced off in the second half of Blues’ FA Cup defeat to Newcastle United on Saturday evening with a nasty gash below the knee. The Scottish midfielder was stretchered off after a coming together with Magpies man Lewis Miley.

“He’s just got a bad gash to the knee,” said Chris Davies. “I don’t think there was any malice from the opposition player, he’s just sort of jumped over him and caught his knee. Whether there’s any issue there I’m not sure, but it was a deep gash to the knee.”

Blues manager Davies could ill-afford another injury in the engine room having lost Taylor Gardner-Hickman on the eve of the match. Gardner-Hickman, whose loan from Bristol City was made permanent on deadline day, has been ruled out of the game against Cambridge United on Tuesday.

Davies added: “Taylor’s got a knock and was missing through that. He’s doubtful for Tuesday, it will take a week or two I would think.”

South Korean ace Paik hasn’t featured in any of Blues’ last seven matches either, leaving Tomoki Iwata as the last man standing in midfield. Iwata is likely to be partnered by Kieran Dowell in midfield against Cambridge if Leonard isn’t fit to take part.
