Birmingham City summer transfer target Mike Eerdhuijzen is finally set to complete a move to England in this January window - and he is set to join Championship strugglers Plymouth Argyle. Eerdhuijzen was close to completing a move to Blues last summer, despite the club's slide into League One, but the proposed move collapsed.

That was much to the disappointment of Eerdhuijzen himself, who has since spoken about the fact that the deal never materialised even though he himself was keen for the transfer to go through.

'I've been brooding for a good month and had a mental blow,” Eerdhuijzen told VI in August. “I want to play football freely, that's the most important thing. I believed in Birmingham's project. In terms of finances and club size, it was a step I was looking forward to and when it falls through, you're disappointed for a moment, but when you realise where you come from, it's not so bad after all.”

Now, however, a deal appears to have been struck between Plymouth and Eerdhuijzen's existing club Sparta Rotterdam in the Dutch Eredivisie. The Green Army, now under the management of Miron Muslic, who replaced former Blues boss Wayne Rooney at the Home Park helm at the beginning of the month, are fighting to remain in the Championship but they are bottom and five points from safety.

Sky Sports report that Argyle are keen to secure the signing of left-sided centre-half Eerdhuijzen before they make the 800-mile round trip to promotion chasing Sunderland in the Championship on Saturday. There are aspects of the deal still to be finalised but it's hoped that the defender can travel to England within the next 24 hours for a medical.

Eerdhuijzen was targeted by FC Twente after his Blues transfer fell through and Sparta seemed willing to sell him to a divisional rival. It was Eerdhuijzen who decided against a transfer after the disappointment of missing out on a move to Birmingham, and he has since made 17 appearances for Sparta this season.

Blues, meanwhile, have undergone a transformation at centre half; Christoph Klarer has been a revelation since signing in the summer, while Blues have moved on Dion Sanderson and have brought in Grant Hanley on a short-term deal. That covers them until the summer, when they'll welcome Phil Neumann from Hannover 96 on a free transfer.
