Bolton 'should have gone down to nine men', claims Charlton boss
Nathan Jones insisted that Wanderers were fortunate to keep 11 players on the field during their defeat against Charlton.
George Thomason escaped a second booking from referee Jacob Miles on the stroke of half time after a late challenge.
During the final stages, Jones insisted that substitute Jay Matete should have seen red for a “stamp” as the Addicks kept the ball in the corner.
“They should have gone down to nine men,” said the Charlton boss. “Two players should have got sent off tonight.
“The midfield boy (Thomason) has got booked and should have got booked again. If he hadn’t been booked for the first one, he would have got booked for the second.
“Right at the end, it is a stamp (by Matete). It should have been far easier for us.
“When you say ‘earn your own luck’, I am not sure we got any luck tonight apart from the deflection. But it could have been a different game anyway.”
The result leaves Charlton 10th in the table and a point behind Wanderers, with a game in hand still to play.
“We were miles off our levels at the weekend and were beaten by a good side (Rotherham) who played well on the day,” Jones added. “We didn’t handle that.
“It was really important at one of the most difficult places to come – these are a good side, big budget, been together a long time, very good players.
“To come here on the back of that, go 1-0 down and win the game showed massive character. They are a difficult side to play against, they played with one striker and packed the midfield.
“They want to dominate the ball so they make it difficult for you. We are aggressive, we want to press everything and at times we get it wrong. We got it wrong for the goal and they countered well.
“A player they have spent well over £1million on scored the goal so it shows the quality they have got.
“To show the character we showed to come back – we scored a wonderful first goal and got lucky with the second. But we went for the win, we made changes to go for the win, and we got it.”
