Bolton Wanderers are closing in on the loan signing of Cardiff City striker Kion Etete.

The Bluebirds are well stocked in the striker department right now, with Callum Robinson on fire and new signing Yousef Salech having made a positive impression following his arrival from Swedish outfit Sirius.

With Isaak Davies soon to be returning from injury and Roko Simic having been recalled from KV Kortrijk, Omer Riza is keen to address the balance of his squad and as such has sought to loan out Etete.

The towering forward has endured a stop-start time of it since arriving at Cardiff from Tottenham in 2022. Injuries, a lack of form and sparse game-time have all culminated in seeing him play just 63 times in all competitions over two-and-a-half years.

The striker's contract is also up at the end of the current campaign and Cardiff want to see him go out and score goals – he has netted just once since October 2023. Sign up to our daily Cardiff City newsletter here.

Etete has been out all season with a hamstring injury which he sustained during the pre-season trip to Austria. He has appeared on the bench once in the league, earlier this month against Watford, while he played 45 minutes in the FA Cup win over Sheffield United.

Riza last week confirmed players would leave before next Monday's transfer deadline, with loans and a permanent exit in the offing.

League One Bolton are in a play-off push, just one point off the top six, but are currently without a manager following the exit of long-term boss Ian Evatt last week. Whether the deal is contingent on the new manager still wanting Etete remains to be seen.

It is understood that there has been interest from a number of clubs in the third tier for Etete's services, but Wanderers now look to be winning the race for his signature.
