WANDERERS’ 2-1 win at Exeter City was marred by a late incident in which the game was halted after a report of racist language used towards former player Josh Magennis.

Referee Ben Speedie stopped the match with around 10 minutes to go after a delay taking a set piece close to the away end.

After a short conversation with Northern Ireland international striker Magennis, he ran over to the fourth official and conveyed a message.

Shortly afterwards, the match announcer instructed supporters that the game would be stopped if any further incidents occurred. But the message was curtailed slightly as Aaron Collins scored Wanderers’ equalising goal.

Exeter boss Gary Caldwell referred to the incident after the final whistle in an interview with BBC Devon. Asked if it affected his team, he added: “I am not sure if it did (impact the game), you would need to ask the players. Obviously, it is a comment we don’t want in the game.

“We don’t want racism in football and Josh felt the need to tell the referee. That is disappointing and we will do all we can to support Josh with that, but I don’t know what impact it had.”

No details have yet been made available and neither club has yet made a statement.
