New book shows artwork of famous City win over Premier League giants Arsenal
ONE of York City's most famous FA Cup wins in their history has been recreated in a new book.
In The Man Who Paints Football Book, artist Paul Town has featured York's famous FA Cup giant-killing win over Arsenal at Bootham Crescent in 1985.
The book, which was published by Heritage Unlocked, features over 100 artworks inspired by the homes of different football clubs, with the focus spanning the length of the footballing nation and includes a foreword from sports commentator John Helm.
That includes Bootham Crescent, with Town's artwork celebrating one of the most famous days in the club's history, as Keith Houchen netted a late penalty to knock out top-flight Arsenal in icy North Yorkshire in 1985.
On artist Town, he fell in love when creating artwork of the long lost home of Bradford (Park Avenue), whilst he was also apart of the crowd when 56 people tragically lost their lives in the fire at Bradford City's Valley Parade in 1985.
His artwork has also been on show in numerous exhibitions, including the Hampden Trilogy.
Town commented: “I endeavoured to paint the portrait of Bootham Crescent with a real terrace feel, capturing the supporters stood with their woolly hats and scarfs on a cold day.
"I particularly enjoyed painting the TV camera peeping over the main stand roof. You can almost hear John Motson’s voice bouncing off the clouds of the biblical sky.
“My love for football, and in particular my love for football grounds, began as a young child.
"Over the past decade I have been able to turn my passion into my profession and this first book provides an insight into both a lost world of football and my journey as an artist.”
The Man Who Paints Football by Paul Town, priced £19.99, is published by Heritage Unlocked and is available from bookshops, galleries, online retailers and from the publishers’ website HERE.
