Borussia Dortmund have Ian Maatsen 'plan' following Chelsea loan after Champions League boost

Ian Maatsen of Borussia Dortmund on loan from Chelsea

Borussia Dortmund reportedly want to sign Ian Maatsen on a permanent deal after his impact during his loan from Chelsea.

The Blues loaned Maatsen to Dortmund in the January transfer window in order to get valuable first-team experience. Since then, the 22-year-old has been the starting left-back under manager Edin Terzic for the Bundesliga club.

Maatsen has made 19 appearances for Dortmund during his loan spell and has started at left-back in all of them. The on-loan Chelsea star has only missed one Bundesliga match due to suspension and has started every single Champions League fixture since the turn of the year.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Dortmund are hoping to keep Maatsen at the club beyond the length of his loan deal, which is set to run out at the end of the season. It has been claimed that the added boost of funds from the Champions League will help Dortmund in their efforts to sign Maatsen this summer.

Wednesday night saw Dortmund face Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League semi-final first leg, where Maatsen played the full 90 minutes at Signal Iduna Park. Dortmund won the game 1-0 thanks to a Niclas Fullkrug goal in the first half, and the win also had an impact on next season's competition.

Victory for Dortmund means that the fifth-place spot for the Champions League goes to the Bundesliga, with the Premier League missing out. Dortmund are currently fifth in the German top flight and are just one point away from guaranteeing their spot in next season's premier European cup competition.

It has been claimed that securing Champions League football is vital to Dortmund's plans for the summer transfer window. As a result of reaching the semi-final and almost securing a spot in next season's tournament, it has been suggested that those extra funds will go towards trying to sign Maatsen on a permanent deal.

Maatsen recently opened up on his decision to leave Chelsea on loan in January. The Blues defender admitted that the decision not to leave Stanford Bridge at the start of the campaign is something that he still thinks about.

“Yeah, it plays with your mind, but I still believed my chance would come by being patient, working hard," Maatsen told The Telegraph when asked if he regrets not leaving Chelsea last summer.

“For some reason, it didn’t work out and afterwards you have to find a solution and the deal happened between Dortmund and Chelsea. Also I need to thank Chelsea that I’m here and they gave me that opportunity.”
