There was a relatively unrecognisable name in the Tottenham starting XI to face Newcastle in goalkeeper Brandon Austin. Due to the injury suffered by Guglielmo Vicario, Fraser Forster has been deputising in between the sticks but he was unable to make the squad due to illness.

As such, Spurs' third-choice 'keeper had to be called upon and it was also amazingly his senior debut for the club despite spending the last 17 years in north London. The 25-year-old has played second and even third string to several No.1s over the last few years with six different managers not utilising him.

Due to absences, he has been on a number of Premier League benches in recent weeks but that could change. Though Forster will likely return soon, he may not start in upcoming games with Spurs agreeing a January deal to sign Antonin Kinsky from Slavia Prague.

Austin will likely go back to being third-choice for the time being with it also unclear when another senior appearance could follow. Having joined the club in 2007, Austin made a number of appearances at youth level before signing a professional contract in 2017.

Loan spells at Viborg and Orland in the MLS came in between that decade, but he has been part of the senior set up for the last four seasons consecutively. Prior to the Newcastle game, Austin had not made one appearance but he was very busy during the first half at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

In the opening minutes, he calmly claimed a number of high crosses but could do nothing about Anthony Gordon's smart finish that arrives just moments after Dominc Solank's early opener. Up against the same man in a similar position, Austin saved well and was able to push the ball behind for a corner.
