Stoke City have completed the first signing of the Mark Robins era by taking left-back Josh Wilson-Esbrand on loan from Manchester City.

The 22-year-old comes in to challenge Eric Bocat, Lynden Gooch and Enda Stevens for game-time on the left of the Potters’ defence – and also addresses a position of need with Bocat out until the end of February, Gooch in the treatment room and Stevens’ struggles to stay fit.

The loan, until the end of the season and subject to FA and EFL approval, reunites the former England youth international with Robins, after a 14-game loan spell at Coventry City as the Sky Blues reached the 2022/23 Championship play-off final.

The Londoner, who will wear the No. 33 shirt, joined City from West Ham as a 16-year-old and has made three first team appearances, two of which came in the 2022/23 Champions League as Pep Guardiola’s side lifted the trophy for the first time.

Last season, the defender featured for French top tier side Reims before he concluded the campaign in the Championship with Cardiff City.

“Josh brings all the physical attributes needed to be a real asset at both ends of the pitch,” said sporting director Jon Walters.

“As a left-footed player who can cover multiple roles, he adds balance, versatility and quality to our squad. With Championship experience and having previously been part of a successful team under Mark, Josh is well-prepared to make a significant impact in a Stoke City shirt.

“When it comes to loan players, you want individuals who fully commit to the club, and that’s been the case with everyone we’ve brought in this season. I’m confident Josh will be no different. I look forward to seeing him receive the warmest of Stoke City welcomes from our fans.”

So far in this transfer window Stoke have recalled Lewis Baker and Nathan Lowe from their loans with Blackburn and Walsall respectively but have seen Tom Cannon return to Leicester City. The Potters now have four loan players, Ashley Phillips, Andrew Moran, Lewis Koumas and Wilson-Esbrand.
