The Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) has condemned threats and abuse directed towards referee Michael Oliver following Arsenal's 1-0 win over Wolves.

The Gunners remained within six points of Premier League leaders Liverpool thanks to Riccardo Calafiori's goal 16 minutes from time, however the game was overshadowed by Myles Lewis-Skelly's first-half dismissal.

Lewis-Skelly was shown a straight red card for a trip on Matt Doherty as the 33-year-old led a Wolves counter-attack. The incident was checked and reviewed with the England youngster deemed to have been guilty of serious foul play following the challenge.

In a statement, the PGMOL said: "We are appalled by the threats and abuse directed at Michael Oliver following the Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Arsenal fixture.

"No official should be subject to any form of abuse, let alone the abhorrent attacks aimed at Michael and his family over the past 24 hours.

"The police are aware, and a number of investigations have commenced. We are supporting Michael, and all those affected, and are determined to tackle this unacceptable behaviour.

"Sadly this is not the first time a match official has been forced to deal with threats in recent times.

"We will continue to support all investigations."

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta was left furious with the decision, speaking after their dramatic win, he told Sky Sports: "I am absolutely fuming but I leave it with you.

"Because it is that obvious, I don't think my words are going to help."

Should the Gunners appeal, he will miss the clash against Manchester City, the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg against Newcastle United and the trip to Leicester City on February 15.
