Ruud van Nistelrooy has sealed his first signing as Leicester City manager with right-back Woyo Coulibaly joining on a four-and-a-half-year contract from Italian side Parma.

The deal, which costs around £3m, sees City strengthen in one of the areas they identified as a priority in the January window, with Coulibaly coming in as competition to James Justin. The 25-year-old Frenchman has been a regular in Serie A this season, having won Serie B with Parma last season.

Renowned for his athleticism and his ball-carrying ability, City will also need Coulibaly to add defensive security to one of the worst-performing back-lines in the division. The club are yet to keep a clean sheet under van Nistelrooy.

Coulibaly is present at the club’s match against Crystal Palace on Wednesday night. He is expected to come into contention for the weekend’s fixture against Fulham.

The deal is a cheap one on account of Coulibaly having just six months remaining on his Parma contract. He was signed for the Italian side from Le Havre by former City manager Enzo Maresca in 2021.

City’s attention in the transfer market is now expected to turn towards a new centre-back and a new winger. If a new central defender arrives, it could lead to an exit for Caleb Okoli, who didn’t even make the bench against Palace. On the wing, van Nistelrooy is looking for a replacement for Abdul Fatawu, who is out for the season with injury.
