SAINTS were powerless to deny Brentford their first victory away from home in the Premier League season, winning 5-0 at St Mary's.

A catalogue of errors handed the Bees the opener through Kevin Schade in just six minutes and they missed chances for a bigger advantage.

The hosts had a couple opportunities of their own before Sepp van den Berg had a header from a set-piece ruled out by VAR after the break.

Bryan Mbeumo made sure of the victory when he netted his 12th goal of the season in the 63rd minute, matching the total scored by Saints this season.

The Cameroonian slotted home a penalty to make 13 for him soon after and both Keane Lewis-Potter and Yoanne Wissa scored in added time.

New boss Ivan Juric praised substitutes Lesley Ugochukwu and Kamaldeen Sulemana after the 2-1 defeat to Crystal Palace last year and both started.

They were the boss's only two changes at St Mary's, with the Frenchman partnering Joe Aribo and the Ghanaian supporting Paul Onuachu.

Former Saints defender Jayden Meghoma, 18, was among the Bees bench - after his summer move to London for a fee worth around £10million.

Brentford had only picked up two points from their nine away matches in the Premier League coming into the fixture, failing to win a single one.

But they were given a dream start to change that here when Joe Aribo's short pass sold Lesley Ugochukwu short in the sixth minute.

The Frenchman dived in and James Bree touched Mikkel Damsgaard's through ball into Schade's path to slot in and open the scoring in front of the Northam.

A similarly lax Jan Bednarek touch allowed Wissa a golden opportunity to net the second but he hit Aaron Ramsdale one-on-one inside the area.

Saints were yet to wake up and Christian Norgaard slammed a header off the bar after 23 minutes as Brentford mustered a chance every 270 seconds.

Kamaldeen had Southampton's first shot 26 minutes in, just as the home crowd were growing frustrated, but it was closer to the corner flag than the goal.

Kyle Walker-Peters then frightened the supporters ahead of the half-time break but he played on despite an uncomfortable twist of his left knee.

Aribo set up Tyler Dibling for his side's best chance shortly after - St Mary's thought he had levelled but his powerful shot ruffled the side netting.

Bree was played in as Saints continued their resurgence but he and after three added minutes went into the interval a goal behind.

That was Bree's last involvement as he was part of a double-change that saw Yuki Sugawara and Charlie Taylor introduced for the second period.

Brentford's ven den Berg scored a header to make it 2-0 but saw it ruled out by VAR as Wissa pushed Bednarek as the corner was swung in.

It was a reprieve for Aribo and Ugochukwu, who between them had made a pituful attempt at marking the eventual scorer and Nathan Collins.

Wissa then ridiculously spooned over a one-on-one under no pressure but atoned as he set up Mbeumo to smack home the second in the 63rd minute.

Ugochukwu then carelessly hauled van den Berg down inside the box for a penalty, which Mbeumo stutter-stepped in past Rasmdale's right.

"He's got the score, on his back," sang the Brentford fans to Saints number 30 Ramsdale - something they had already done earlier this season.

As the teams entered five minutes added on, Mbeumo casually knocked the ball into yards of space at the back-post where Lewis-Potter rolled in the fourth.

Sugawara helped the Bees to their fifth when his soft headed back pass was pounced upon by Wissa to score from a similar angle as Lewis-Potter.
