Brentford vs Arsenal LIVE!

Arsenal moved top of the Premier League when a late goal by Kai Havertz earned them a 1-0 victory at Brentford on Saturday.

Manchester City's earlier draw with Liverpool meant Mikel Arteta's side would leapfrog both clubs with a win but that did not look likely for most of the game. Arsenal keeper Aaron Ramsdale, recalled to the side, got away with a huge mistake in the first half, while the visitors had a goal by Leandro Trossard ruled out for offside.

Havertz, who came on as a substitute, eventually broke the deadlock with a close-range header in the 89th minute. Arsenal moved up to first place with 30 points from 13 games, one ahead of City and two ahead of Liverpool.

Brentford vs Arsenal highlights

Arsenal analysis

20:09 , Marc Mayo

Arsenal went top of the Premier League after a performance against Brentford that encapsulated their season.

There were all the hallmarks of every Arsenal game we've seen so far: the Gunners weren’t at their best, there were some shaky moments from their goalkeeper and, of course, VAR drama.

The only surprise was the hero, with Kai Havertz coming off the bench to score the only goal of the game in the 89th minute.

Brentford 0-1 Arsenal: Video verdict

20:00 , Marc Mayo

This was a big warning to Arsenal's rivals.

Not much praise for Aaron Ramsdale

19:54 , Marc Mayo

Mikel Arteta is also asked to comment on Aaron Ramsdale's performance but perhaps pointedly comments only on the team performance, in contrast to his comments on Kai Havertz...

Asked about Ramsdale, he tells TNT Sport: "I'm so happy with the team, the way it performed and the clean sheet.

"I'm so happy with the way everybody played."

When pressed on Ramsdale's nervy first half, he adds: "The team was exceptional today."

Mikel Arteta on Kai Havertz's winner

19:51 , Marc Mayo

"Delighted, you just have to see the reaction from everybody - how much they love him and how much he brings to the team.

"And it's what he needs to do.

"We believed he could change the game, the way they were defending.

"It was a perfect timing, perfect execution and he won the game for us."

Kai Havertz reacts to his goal

19:32 , Marc Mayo

"Feels amazing, been working hard for these moments.

"Today I got it paid back and I'm just happy to help the team with that.

"It was a brilliant goal, a brilliant pass as well. We trained this routine quite a lot in training, Bukayo and Marti love to play this ball so it's a good goal.

"Football is always hard work and nothing comes from itself, you have to work and keep belief. It was tough for me the last couple of months, I tried to put my ego aside as the team is the most important thing.

"I've been so thankful for the fans as well, it's hard when the new signing comes for a lot of money and they think it comes easy and fast, I'm thankful to them for supporting me."

Arsenal encamped in the Brentford half, where they've spent much of the game. But they find Ben Mee in the way as they look for a route into the box.

Awful corner from Bukayo Saka. Right down the throat of Mark Flekken, who catches under no pressure.

Arsenal's set pieces haven't been up to much tonight.

18:58 , Marc Mayo

Arsenal edging towards this game going down as a 'missed opportunity' but only one moment is needed to change that.

First time in a long while Brentford get to play some possession, and they work it well before William Saliba deals with Bryan Mbeumo expertly.

Brentford 0-0 Arsenal | 56 mins

18:46 , Marc Mayo

Aaron Ramsdale races off his line well to prevent Bryan Mbeumo chasing a long ball, for which he had the beating of Gabriel for pace.

Brentford get a free-kick however as Gabriel Martinelli arrives late on Frank Onyeka. Yellow card.

Brentford 0-0 Arsenal | 55 mins

18:44 , Marc Mayo

Another promising moment for Gabriel Martinelli, a beautiful control allowing him to tee a ball into the box.

A vital Brentford flick takes it off the attackers rushing forwards and Arsenal settle for a corner.

Well cleared by Ethan Pinnock at the near post.

Brentford 0-0 Arsenal | 52 mins

18:42 , Marc Mayo

Yoane Wissa spins Bryan Mbeumo into a good spot on the right flank, running diagonally on goal.

But he shoots tamely and wide of the near post.

Hint of offside in the build-up perhaps saves him.

Brentford 0-0 Arsenal | 50 mins

Mighty fine ball in by Gabriel Martinelli loops towards the back post yet no Arsenal player gambled.

The players are heading back out onto the pitch.

Is a point enough to take Arsenal top of the table?

18:31

Nope.

As things stand, the Gunners would be third and a single point behind leaders Manchester City.

In fact, a draw here would allow Tottenham to go level with City at the summit if they win tomorrow...

Things going to plan for Brentford

18:28 , Marc Mayo

They may have only had 30 per cent of possession and a single shot on target, via a major Aaron Ramsdale error, but Brentford have defended rather well.

More support for Bryan Mbeumo needed in attack.

Do Arsenal need to switch things up?

18:24 , Marc Mayo

Brentford's low block has succeeded in stifling Arsenal so far (just about).

Despite playing two attacking central midfielders in this 4-1-2-3 system, Arsenal haven't been able to unlock their hosts very often.

Eddie Nketiah or maybe even Kai Havertz may be readied if things don't change soon...

Another bizarre one from Aaron Ramsdale, his throw catching a Brentford man before Arsenal escape a bigger catastrophe.

All the signs of a goalkeeper playing inside his own head.

"England's number four" chant the home fans now.

The Gunners look to break but Bukayo Saka miscontrols, Gabriel Jesus later firing over from a tight angle.

Brentford 0-0 Arsenal | 36 mins

18:07 , Marc Mayo

Not going Arsenal's way right now, Brentford able to win fouls from the 50-50s in midfield.

It's all turning into a bit of a chess match, one which Thomas Frank is winning.

This has been a very competitive game so far, Gabriel Martinelli and then Bukayo Saka look to gallop into space on the wings but both find too many bodies in their way.

Lovely tracking back from Frank Onyeka to pinch the ball off Gabriel Martinelli's toe in the Brentford box.

The Bees then win a goal kick, a very strong defensive effort from them so far.

Every touch and kick from Ramsdale now being greeted by huge jeers from the home fans. He is in for a long night.

Also, after 90 minutes on Tuesday against Argentina, this will be a challenge for Jesus. Brentford are playing with three centre-backs - and they are all huge.

More Mikel Arteta histrionics coming up?

17:24

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has urged football's authorities not to clamp down too hard on manager's emotions.

The Spaniard is awaiting the result of an FA charge with this his 200th game at the helm of Arsenal.

Fans' opinion has been split over Arteta's theatrics on the touchline, but he says it's an integral part of the game.

He told reporters on Friday: “We live a game that is passionate and we play to win. And it has to happen. You have to react. Let’s sit down here in the theatre and be on mute and see if this league and this game is that interesting. It won’t be.

"That’s what makes it special."

Thomas Frank explains his team selection

17:19

"Of course there' area lot of teams with injury issues, we have a little more thin squad. It's a challenge we need to solve.

"I'm a big believer in the team that they can do the job and win the game today.

"Roerslev should be ready for Luton. Jensen picked up a minor adductor strain, hopefully he should also be ready for Luton. With three centre-backs, Janelt and Ghoddos will be the wing-backs."

Takehiro Tomiyasu gets his chance

17:15

Ben White's injury keeps him on the bench tonight, but that means more chances for Takehiro Tomiyasu.

The Japanese full-back has been on top form of late - earning the interest of Bayern Munich.

However, Arsenal have no interest in a January deal.
