Brentford vs Ipswich Town

17:16

The final whistle has been blown on a frantic Premier League fixture which looked destined to be a 0-0 after 25 minutes. Neither team seemed to be able to get going after the first whistle until Szmodics opened the scoring with a tidy right-footed finish into the bottom corner to make it 1-0 to Ipswich. Moments after, Ipswich doubled their lead through Hirst on his first Premier League start. He dinked his effort over Flekken in goal to make it 2-0 to the away team after 31 minutes. Brentford hit back just before half-time, as Wissa finished simply past Muric to plant a seed of doubt into Ipswich's minds. That seed quickly grew, as in the 46th minute, Clarke scored an own goal following another Wissa shot that Muric failed to keep out. Clarke slid in to stop the ball but couldn't stop it completely, and that made the score 2-2 at the break. Only six minutes after the restart, Lewis-Potter was brought down inside the box, and following a VAR check, Mbeumo lifted his penalty high into Muric’s goal to make it 3-2 to the home team to complete a turnaround. The score remained 3-2 until the 86th minute, where substitute Delap met Davis’ cross to touch home an equaliser and seemingly earn a point for Ipswich. Brentford weren’t done yet, however, and Mbeumo put in a cross in the 96th minute, which evaded attackers, defenders, and goalkeeper alike. Muric was expecting a touch on the ball and was rooted to the spot as he watched the cross nestle in the bottom left corner to win the game for Brentford. The score at full-time was 4-3 to the home team, and Thomas Frank will be delighted with the resilience of his side to get three points in the end. Brentford finished the game with an xG of 3.94, showing the amount and quality of the chance they made. Ipswich finished the game with 1.36 xG, and broken hearts as they go back to East Anglia with no points. Thank you for joining this live text commentary, goodbye!

FULL-TIME: BRENTFORD 4-3 IPSWICH TOWN

Brentford vs Ipswich Town

17:04

OFF THE BAR! Delap nearly equalises again in the 98th minute! He spun inside the box and smashed a shot from just inside the box, but to his dismay, he saw the shot rattle off the bar! What an ending!

Brentford vs Ipswich Town

17:04

GOOOOOOAL!!! Mbeumo wins it for Brentford in the 96th minute! Mbeumo swung a cross in with his left foot from the right side, and there was no touch from the attackers or the defenders. The curl on the effort evades Muric, as he was expecting a touch from someone! 4-3!

Brentford vs Ipswich Town

17:01

Both teams are rapidly running out of time to clinch a late goal here, Ipswich will be the happier of the two teams with the scoreline how it is. They have done well to get back into this game after going behind.

Brentford vs Ipswich Town

17:00

WHAT A CHANCE! Collins blazes over the bar from five yards out! The corner was swung in, and the ball fell to the defender, who rushed the shot, and the chance goes begging late on in this game!

Brentford vs Ipswich Town

Brentford earn a later corner as Burns opts for safety and clears the ball over the touchline under minimal pressure.

Brentford vs Ipswich Town

Goal Liam Rory Delap

Brentford vs Ipswich Town

16:49

There was a great block inside the Ipswich box by Phillips, right after a Schade shot that looked very favourable for the Brentford man. Brilliant defending from the man on loan from Manchester City.

Brentford vs Ipswich Town

16:48

Ipswich earn a free-kick around 25 yards out, and Davis swings it in. Burgess meets a header on the edge of the box but opts to cushion the touch rather than go for goal, and the ball rolls for a goal-kick.

Brentford vs Ipswich Town

16:45

Substitution Keane William Lewis-Potter Fábio Leandro Freitas Gouveia de Carvalho

Brentford vs Ipswich Town

16:44

As we enter the final 10 minutes, the shaken-up Ipswich side will desperately look to grab some points from this game. They will feel as though they deserve it after a good period in the first half.

Brentford vs Ipswich Town

16:44

Jensen is also brought on in place of Norgaard. The Brentford captain has been brilliant in midfield in this game, and Jensen takes over captain duties from him.

Brentford vs Ipswich Town

16:44

That chance for Damsgaard was his final involvement in the game, as he leaves the pitch in a Brentford change. Schade replaces him after starting the last Premier League game.

Brentford vs Ipswich Town

16:44

WHAT A SAVE! Muric denies Damsgaard! He got down so well to stop the Dane’s powerful shot into the bottom left corner. Brilliant goalkeeping.

Brentford vs Ipswich Town

16:44

In the last of the Ipswich changes, Hirst is replaced after scoring and assisting on his first start. Delap, who was expected to start, comes on in the 73rd minute.

Brentford vs Ipswich Town

16:44

Szmodics also leaves the pitch, with his goal feeling like a lifetime ago. He has struggled to get into the game since his only involvement. Jack Clarke comes on to replace him.

Brentford vs Ipswich Town

16:43

Woolfenden comes into the action to replace Chaplin, who has had a tough game as captain. This is the first of three Ipswich changes.

Brentford vs Ipswich Town

16:40

Damsgaard strikes the resulting free-kick just over the bar! They claim a touch from Muric, but a goal-kick is given.

Brentford vs Ipswich Town

16:34

WHAT A CHANCE! Wissa misses a chance to get his hat trick! He was played in on goal by Damsgaard and only had Muric to beat, but the goalkeeper stood tall and denied him!

Brentford vs Ipswich Town

16:34

Yellow 2nd/RC Harrison Thomas Clarke

Brentford vs Ipswich Town

16:32

Janelt goes in on Chaplin with a rather strong tackle right in front of the referee, on the centre circle. No yellow card was given, but it was a very close call.

Brentford vs Ipswich Town

16:30

CLOSE! More great work by Lewis-Potter on the left side as he cuts inside and curls a cross to the back post. Norgaard meets it but can’t direct his header goalward, and it goes out for a goal-kick.

Brentford vs Ipswich Town

16:29

Brentford have swung the possession back to them again, and they are putting a lot of pressure on the Ipswich midfield and defence as they search for an insurance goal.

Brentford vs Ipswich Town

16:27

CHANCE! The ball drops the Lewis-Potter right in front of the goal, with only a couple of bodies to beat. He struggles to get the ball out of his feet, and the resulting shot is poor. What a chance to put his side further ahead.

Brentford vs Ipswich Town

16:26

Clarke does well against Lewis-Potter, minutes after conceding the penalty that put Brentford ahead. He also has an own goal to his name from this game, so he will regain some confidence from that duel.

Brentford vs Ipswich Town

16:25

Ipswich have gained a sense of comfort in possession now as they enjoy a period of calm. Brentford are sitting off them slightly, happy to stay in the lead with no pressure.

Brentford vs Ipswich Town

16:21

There have been 22 goals at the Gtech Community Stadium so far in the Premier League, the most of any stadium.

Brentford vs Ipswich Town

16:20

Ipswich definitely won’t sit back and accept going behind; they will continue to search for what will be an equaliser now. McKenna will be so, so disappointed with the fashion in which his side have gone behind.

Brentford vs Ipswich Town

16:19

What a turnaround this has been from Brentford; it has been a breathless game since the 44th minute when Wissa pulled one back!

Brentford vs Ipswich Town

16:18

GOALLL! Mbeumo puts Brentford ahead from 12 yards to maintain his 100% penalty record for Brentford. He lifted his shot high into the roof of the net after a slight jump in his run-up. 3-2 to Brentford!

Brentford vs Ipswich Town

16:17

PENALTY! Brentford have a chance from the spot after a short VAR check! They deemed the foul to be continued inside the area after the initial contact outside the box!

Brentford vs Ipswich Town

16:16

Lewis-Potter goes down seemingly inside the box after crossing Clarke’s path. The referee blows his whistle and points for a free-kick. The VAR are checking for a penalty!

Brentford vs Ipswich Town

16:12

Ipswich have an early corner in this second half as Davis earns it out on the left side. Pinnock clears the cross and then Davis strikes wildly over the bar on the follow-up.

Brentford vs Ipswich Town

16:12

The teams are back out on the pitch, and the crowd has only just got their breath back after the end of that first half. Ipswich Town get us going again, and the second half is under way!

Brentford vs Ipswich Town

16:04

Looking to the second half, Brentford have the wind in their sails now and will look to build upon the frantic end to the first half. They had a very slow start to the game but showed their quality in the closing stages and now have 45 minutes to go further and get the win. As for Ipswich, Kieran McKenna will be gutted with how his side has given away their lead but will remain confident that they can regain it. They have gotten past the Brentford defence several times already, and there will be chances in the second half; it just depends on whether they take them or not.

Brentford vs Ipswich Town

16:00

It’s half-time here at the Gtech Community Stadium, and what started as a very placid game has turned into a goal-fest within the last 15 minutes of the half! Neither side managed any meaningful attacks for the first 20 minutes, but then in the 28th, Szmodics put the away side ahead after a nice touch from Hirst allowed him to bend a shot into the bottom-right corner of Flekken’s goal. Only three minutes later, the provider for the first goal, Hirst, doubled Ipswich’s lead with a composed dink over Flekken on his first Premier League start. That made it 2-0, and it seemed as though we would go into the break with Ipswich two goals ahead. Wissa had other ideas, and in the 44th minute, Janelt squared him the ball after great work from Lewis-Potter, and Wissa stroked the ball home with ease. That made the score 2-1, but the goals weren’t done yet! Wissa broke through the Ipswich Town backline and struck a shot beyond Muric. The goalkeeper got something on the shot, and Clarke then slid in to block the shot. Unfortunately for him, he couldn’t keep the ball out, and it went down as an own goal for the Ipswich man. That made the score 2-2 and that is how the scoreline reads at the break.

Brentford vs Ipswich Town

15:54

HALF-TIME: BRENTFORD 2-2 IPSWICH TOWN

Brentford vs Ipswich Town

15:54

There will more than likely be a couple of extra minutes on top of the added time due to the VAR check on the Brentford goal moments ago.

Brentford vs Ipswich Town

15:52

Brentford have scored 12 first-half goals in nine games; only Manchester City (13) have scored more in the Premier League this season. It didn’t quite come in the first minute today, but they love scoring goals in the first half!

Brentford vs Ipswich Town

15:50

There is no offside after a very tight check, and the score remains 2-2! Brentford have pulled themselves into the game as quickly as they went behind.

Brentford vs Ipswich Town

15:50

GOALLL! Brentford are level! Wissa was played through on goal and slotted his shot past Muric, who got something on the shot but not enough to keep it out. Clarke slides in to block but can’t keep it out! It goes down as an own goal by Clarke after the shot rolled over the line! 2-2! The VAR is checking for a tight offside...

Brentford vs Ipswich Town

15:49

There will be six added minutes!

Brentford vs Ipswich Town

15:45

Assist Vitaly Janelt

Brentford vs Ipswich Town

15:43

Yellow Card Leif Davis

Brentford vs Ipswich Town

15:43

Brentford are still yet to create a good chance or a shot on target as we head towards half-time. The performance so far has been very unlike their recent games.

Brentford vs Ipswich Town

15:42

BIG CHANCE! Szmodics has the chance to make it three after Ipswich pressed Brentford perfectly; the ball broke to him, but the finish was very poor and lacked composure.

Brentford vs Ipswich Town

15:42

Burgess gets another shot on target after a Chaplin cross into the box; unfortunately for the defender, the header was weak and Flekken saved comfortably.

Brentford vs Ipswich Town

15:42

Brentford have failed to win any of their last 11 matches when conceding first in the Premier League, since a victory over Nottingham Forest on January 20, 2024. That is worrying for Thomas Frank’s side after going behind by two so quickly.

Brentford vs Ipswich Town

15:37

Ogbene is taken off of the pitch on a stretcher after a long time on the floor. Wes Burns replaces him in an early change for Ipswich, which Kieran McKenna would not have wanted.

Brentford vs Ipswich Town

15:35

Chaplin, who assumed responsibility of the captain's armband today, gets the assist for this goal. He swept the ball across half of the pitch with his left foot for Hirst to latch onto, and the striker did the rest on his first start in the Premier League!

Brentford vs Ipswich Town

15:32

Goal George David Eric Hirst

Brentford vs Ipswich Town

15:31

GOOOOAL! Ipswich go ahead through Szmodics! Last season's Championship top scorer puts the away team ahead with a composed right-footed finish past Flekken! 1-0 to Ipswich, and now Brentford have to respond!

Brentford vs Ipswich Town

15:31

Assist George David Eric Hirst

Brentford vs Ipswich Town

15:29

Ogbene made good headway on the right before Clarke fizzed a cross into the Brentford box, resulting in another Ipswich corner.

Brentford vs Ipswich Town

15:26

Chaplin is back on, and the game has restarted again.

Brentford vs Ipswich Town

15:25

Chaplin is down on the pitch and is receiving treatment. Whilst this is going on, both teams take a minute to speak to their manager and have some water.

Brentford vs Ipswich Town

15:25

43.3% of possession has been in the middle third of the pitch. This further highlights how little of the play has gone past the halfway line for either team. They’re both playing very tentatively so far.

Brentford vs Ipswich Town

15:21

Muric is forced into a save following a Brentford corner that Norgaard met with his head. It took a deflection off an Ipswich body, and the Kosovo man had to be alert.

Brentford vs Ipswich Town

15:20

Brentford have had 65.7% possession over the opening 15 minutes of this game, showing their ability to wait for a chance to appear and not rush their play.

Brentford vs Ipswich Town

15:20

There still hasn’t been too much to report on; both teams, but mainly Brentford, are trying to build attacks but there hasn’t been a big chance as of yet.

Brentford vs Ipswich Town

15:16

Brentford are now enjoying a period of comfortable possession, testing the water every now and then by pinging a ball forward. When nothing materialises, they reset and go again.

Brentford vs Ipswich Town

15:14

Following on from the scrappy start football-wise, there has also been some unnecessary fouls in the last few minutes. The game is heating up; can either team use their aggression to score?

Brentford vs Ipswich Town

15:11

This has been a scrappy opening 10 minutes, with neither side being able to fashion a proper and well-thought-out attack.

Brentford vs Ipswich Town

15:09

The first half-chance for Brentford fell to Mbeumo who cut in onto his left foot, but his shot was blocked straight away. There was a small period of pinball after the shot, but Ipswich held their shape and managed to shut out the shots.

Brentford vs Ipswich Town

15:06

Brentford concede another corner after a cross failed to meet Davis at the back post. Van den Berg put the ball behind to save any danger. The corner is dealt with by Brentford, who are yet to concede a set-piece goal this season.

Brentford vs Ipswich Town

15:05

Brentford survive an early Ipswich corner, and the resulting attack after the ball was cleared. Ipswich Town have started the game very brightly, however.

Brentford vs Ipswich Town

15:02

One minute has passed on the clock and the score is still 0-0, which is a very boring start by Brentford’s standards.

Brentford vs Ipswich Town

15:01

KICK-OFF! Brentford get the game under way, and they’re off and running!

Brentford vs Ipswich Town

15:00

The teams are out on the pitch and ready for kick-off here in London!

Brentford vs Ipswich Town

14:53

Thomas Frank makes two changes from the loss away in Manchester, with Wissa a welcome addition back into the starting squad. He begins the game up front at the expense of Kevin Schade, who drops to the bench. The other change sees Roerslev start in defence, taking the place of Kristoffer Ajer. Pinnock makes his 100th Premier League appearance in this game, and Norgaard captains the side. As for Ipswich, McKenna has made six changes to his side after the 2-0 loss against Everton. This is the highest amount of changes from one match to another this season for Ipswich. Among those that have been switched, and potentially the most surprising omission is Liam Delap. He has looked great this season but drops to the bench to allow Hirst to start from the off. Two other big changes see their captain Sam Morsy and Omari Hutchinson miss out on the matchday squad, meaning that Cajuste and Chaplin come in. Chaplin also takes the armband for this match.

BRENTFORD (4-2-3-1): Mark Flekken; Mads Roerslev, Ethan Pinnock, Nathan Collins, Sepp van den Berg; Vitaly Janelt, Christian Norgaard; Keane Lewis-Potter, Bryan Mbeumo, Mikkel Damsgaard; Yoane Wissa.

Brentford vs Ipswich Town

14:48

Kieran McKenna will be somewhat disappointed with how his side have started the campaign; they are winless so far and put up a lacklustre performance last time out against Everton. The Suffolk side have looked bright in spells early on in the season and have picked up their four points from four consecutive draws. Although it is still early in the competition, Ipswich could have done with three points in what would have been seen as a ‘winnable’ game against Everton before facing stronger opponents, like Brentford. Ipswich will view this match as a difficult one, but also as a chance to get their first win of this season.

Brentford vs Ipswich Town

14:43

Thomas Frank’s team has started this Premier League campaign in a mixed way; he will be disappointed with his side's 2-1 loss against Manchester United in the previous matchday, as they threw away a lead at Old Trafford. However, they have managed to pick up valuable points in other games against Wolves, Southampton, and Crystal Palace. They are known for scoring early on in games but struggle to hold onto their lead at times. If they can be more solid at the back, a home win is in sight here.

Brentford vs Ipswich Town

14:38

Both teams in this game are competing in the bottom half of the table, despite less than 10 games being played so far. Brentford come into this game on the back of a 2-1 away loss to Manchester United. It was a game that Brentford scored first in, but they let their lead slip and came away with no points to show for their efforts. As for Ipswich, they are still winless and come into this fixture after a 2-0 home loss to Everton. The last time these two faced each other was in 2019, when both teams were playing in the Championship. Brentford ran away as 2-0 winners on the day, but now they face up in the Premier League for the first time.
