Brighton 4-1 Chelsea FC LIVE! Premier League result, match stream and latest updates today

Brighton vs Chelsea - LIVE!

Graham Potter's return to Brighton & Hove Albion turned into a nightmare when he suffered his first defeat since taking charge of Chelsea in a 4-1 loss in the Premier League on Saturday.

The hosts made a blistering start at the Amex Stadium against Potter's bewildered side, racing into the lead inside five minutes through a well-taken Leandro Trossard goal. Breathless Brighton kept coming and soon had a quickfire second after Ruben Loftus-Cheek diverted a corner into his own net, with another own goal from Trevoh Chalobah making it three for Brighton three minutes before the interval.

Chelsea started well after the break and got back in it three minutes into the second half through Kai Havertz's header, but the damage had already been done and Potter's team could not rouse a comeback. Pascal Gross's last-gasp fourth goal capped a fine afternoon for Potter's successor Roberto De Zerbi, with the first win of his reign moving Brighton up to seventh in the standings, while Chelsea stay fifth, eight points behind leaders Manchester City.

De Zerbi takes off Trossard for Sarmiento.

16:42 , Marc Mayo

83 mins: Loftus-Cheek felled by Enciso, that man again, on the right flank to earn a booking for the Brighton youngster.

Ziyech stands over it and floats his whipped cross out at the far post.

16:38 , Marc Mayo

80 mins: The last roll of the dice with ten to go...

Ziyech and Broja replace Gallagher and Pulisic for Chelsea.

CHANCE BRIGHTON!

16:36 , Marc Mayo

78 mins: Again, Enciso is the one making in-roads as he sends Chalobah for an ice cream and bombs forward.

With Trossard to his right, the teenager shoots and Silva deflects it wide.

16:35 , Marc Mayo

76 mins: Enciso rifles an effort at Mendy from range. This game is still open enough for Brighton to grab a fourth...

16:32 , Marc Mayo

74 mins: No magic from Chelsea yet, Chalobah tripping Trossard to allow Brighton a chance to slow the game down even more.

A record crowd of 31,746 present in the Amex today.

16:31 , Marc Mayo

72 mins: Brighton show Chelsea aren’t the only team with someone facing his old club as Lamptey replaces the impressive Mitoma.

A standing ovation for the winger after his first Premier League start.

16:27 , Marc Mayo

68 mins: Enciso, the Paraguauyan teenager on his Premier League debut, is a little too keen to make an impact. And he does so on Kovacic’s heel with his studs, to concede a foul.

Chelsea searching for renewed momentum as the clock ticks down...

16:24 , Marc Mayo

65 mins: Mendy reminding Chelsea fans why his footwork was one of the reasons he got dropped...

A weak pass out from his six-yard box to Mitoma leads to Trossard’s chip being plucked out the air by the goalkeeper on his 100th Chelsea appearance.

16:22 , Marc Mayo

63 mins: A scrappy period in the game so Potter turns to his bench.

Sterling and Pulisic are off for Aubameyang and Chilwell. Some confusion as Pulisic’s number initially went up.

Brighton bring Enciso on for Lallana.

16:17 , Marc Mayo

59 mins: Better from Brighton as they look to take the edge off the game, Webster looping a cross up for Mendy’s first play of the game.

Up the other end, Mount takes aim from distance and flies his shot wide.

16:14 , Marc Mayo

56 mins: It feels like there is a lot more space for Chelsea to play in this half, that Brighton press dropping off a touch.

Pulisic gets into a good spot down the left again but fires a cross into no man’s land.

16:11 , Marc Mayo

53 mins: Nearly the third own goal of the day...

Havertz darts down the left and Gross’ flick is turned away by Sanchez - nearly a carbon copy of Chalobah’s OG.

Chelsea have switched formation to a 4-3-3 with Ruben Loftus-Cheek now playing at right back.

In true Graham Potter fashion away at Brighton, he has switched formation with a player in a foreign position. After a bright start to the half, it just might work.

16:08 , Marc Mayo

50 mins: Sterling booked for going in late on Estupinan, who can continue after some treatment.

GGGOOOOAAALLLLL!!! Brighton 3-1 Chelsea | Havertz

Callum Wilson has just netted a penalty deep into stoppage time as Newcastle lead Aston Villa on Tyneside.

Tottenham are a goal down at Bournemouth while Crystal Palace lead Southampton 1-0 at St Mary’s.

Brentford and Wolves are goalless.

Nizaar Kinsella at the Amex

15:51 , Marc Mayo

Roberto De Zerbi has done an absolute job on Graham Potter's new Chelsea system, leaving a blueprint of how to exploit their makeshift wing-backs.

It has been a perfect storm for Chelsea who are unable to defend in this structure against a quality team.

Potter needs to use some of their five available substitutes as soon as possible.

Half time! Brighton 3-0 Chelsea

15:48 , Marc Mayo

Lallana flashes a header wide to cap a magnificent half for Brighton.

Those Chelsea fans in the away end must be wondering what on earth they have just witnessed...

15:47 , Marc Mayo

45 mins: There is a palpable sense of glee, quite unlike what you usually see from a set of fans, among the Brighton supporters right now.

“You’re getting sacked in the morning!” gets another airing as Trossard wins a corner with a shot deflecting off Silva.

One minute added on.

GGGOOOOOOAAALLLL!!! Brighton 3-0 Chelsea | Chalobah OG

15:43 , Marc Mayo

42 mins: IS THAT GAME OVER?!

Estupinan strolls down the left and crosses the ball into the sliding Chalobah’s path, and the ball casually rolls over the line.

My, oh my...

15:42 , Marc Mayo

41 mins: Safe to say Cucurella is not a popular boy on his return to Brighton, the 2021-22 Seagulls’ Player of the Year earning some loud boos as he collects the ball for a throw in by his old fans.

15:40 , Marc Mayo

39 mins: More set-piece fears for Chelsea as Webster flicks a corner towards the back stick, but Trossard is not quite in the right spot to turn it home.

15:38 , Marc Mayo

36 mins: Sterling falls in the box in an incredibly hopeful attempt to win a penalty.

Gross was getting physical - it wasn’t a dive - but nothing like enough of a grapple to cause him to tumble.

15:37 , Marc Mayo

35 mins: A rare, quiet moment for the game as Kovacic looks to puncture the Brighton defence but finds Estupinan in his way.

Havertz is back to deal with Brighton’s latest attempt to burst forward. It must be said, the hosts have been very impressive so far.

15:34 , Marc Mayo

32 mins: Chelsea’s fortunes yet to improve as Mount overhits a through ball into Havertz after some nice movement.

And Kepa appears to be feeling his leg, with Mendy warming up on the touchline. Maybe one of the three rushes towards the halfway line has done for the Blues keeper...

Nizaar Kinsella at the Amex

15:32 , Marc Mayo

Leandro Trossard now has seven goals in 12 games and is quickly emerging as their star man.

Every time he gets the ball in the final third, Chelsea look terrified.

There's no doubt that his display here will fire up the transfer rumours with less than two years on his deal should Brighton use their option to extend it.

15:31 , Marc Mayo

30 mins: A nervy moment for Sanchez as the Brighton goalkeeper spills a corner - but no Chelsea player is nearby to poach it home.

Once he does gather it, the Spaniard immediately launches a forward ball and Kepa comes 40 yards off his line to hack clear.

15:29 , Marc Mayo

27 mins: Both teams are determined to press but it is Brighton’s causing more issues for their opponents so far.

Chelsea’s front two of Mount and Havertz have simply not been in the game.

15:25 , Marc Mayo

24 mins: We’ve had a whole game’s worth of action in just over a quarter of the match here...

Kovacic the next to make a good run and fire into a crowded box as Brighton clear.

15:23 , Marc Mayo

22 mins: The visitors are not rolling over...

Sterling wins the ball and Chelsea come forward, Havertz latching onto a long ball and firing into the near post where Sanchez parries a comfortable save into touch.

CHANCE CHELSEA!

15:21 , Marc Mayo

20 mins: A beautiful save by Sanchez to deny Gallagher’s flicked header after a fine Sterling ball from the left!

CHANCE CHELSEA!

15:19 , Marc Mayo

18 mins: As the “sacked in the morning” chants dissipate, Gallagher finds himself clean through but Sanchez parries his shot.

It comes to Pulisic and he skews his rebound wide!

GGGOOOOOAAALLLLL!!! Brighton 2-0 Chelsea | Loftus-Cheek OG

15:15 , Marc Mayo

14 mins: IT’S TWO!

Another corner swings in and Loftus-Cheek sticks it in his own net!

A clumsy knee from the Chelsea man in his own six-yard box and the ball cannons in off the underside of the bar...

15:14 , Marc Mayo

13 mins: More shakiness from Kepa as Estupinan launches a deep cross that the goalkeeper flaps at, before Brighton win a corner.

Havertz nods clear at the near post.

15:12 , Marc Mayo

11 mins: Kovacic concedes a foul and takes the game’s first booking for clattering March with a high foot.

15:10 , Marc Mayo

8 mins: Chelsea try to fire up a reply but Brighton, backed by their vocal support, are right up for this.

GOOOAAAALLLLLL!!!! Brighton 1-0 Chelsea | Trossard

15:06 , Marc Mayo

5 mins: THAT HAS BEEN COMING!

Trossard dances through the defence, beats Kepa and slams home...

“Potter, what’s the score?” rings around the Amex!

CHANCE BRIGHTON!

15:06 , Marc Mayo

4 mins: And Silva again!

The corner reaches Estupinan, who rockets an effort towards the far post but finds Silva in the right place once more.

CHANCE BRIGHTON!

15:05 , Marc Mayo

3 mins: Chelsea give the ball away from the goal kick and Trossard chips Kepa... but Silva is there to head off the line!

It was the Brazilian who gave the ball away...

15:04 , Marc Mayo

2 mins: A four-man defence for Brighton, shielded by Mac Allister and Caicedo.

Chelsea win the ball up high but quickly lose it and the hosts break, Mitoma almost laying a nice ball in behind that rolls out for a goal kick.

Chelsea are playing their attacking wing backs again with Christian Pulisic and Raheem Sterling retaining their place.

It will undoubtedly mean there will be space in behind for Brighton to exploit but Chelsea try to mitigate that by Mateo Kovacic and Conor Gallagher dropping in.

Another big test of this system that Graham Potter has recently adopted.

It is not only Graham Potter returning to Brighton today as Chelsea’s £50million summer signing Marc Cucurella is back at his old club.

Last year’s Player of the Season, the Spaniard is up against his replacement, Pervis Estupinan, today and starts in central defence.

Potter thanks Brighton for support

14:36 , Marc Mayo

Graham Potter, of course, returns to Brighton today and the manager paid tribute to his old club for helping him deal with the death of his parents after only six months at the club.

He said: “So that was the first six months of life in the Premier League and I think the quote is: ‘You’re fixing the plane while it’s up in the air’. That’s a great quote.

“So that’s also the challenge but you have to come through it and thankfully I was at a really good club that gave me support and help and we managed to stay on the path."

Another chance for Havertz

14:32 , Marc Mayo

It was a fine midweek for Kai Havertz as he netted a superb winner for Chelsea at RB Salzburg.

After the game, the German - who starts again today - sent a defiant message to his doubters.

“After three years [at Chelsea], everyone should know by now what I can do, that I'm flexible up front and I can play a lot of different positions," Havertz said at the Red Bull Arena.

“Of course, sometimes it's good to play in different positions and sometimes it's bad, but in general I'm an offensive player. I like to be in the box.

“I like to score goals. I like to arrive in the box often and I don't care if I'm there as a no9 or a no10. If I'm in the box, I'm there to score goals and that's it.”

Chelsea have given Omari Hutchinson a spot on the bench for the first time.

The 18-year-old has been in sensational form for the Under-21s and has got four goals and three assists in his last six games at that level.

Chelsea welcome back Mount

14:19 , Marc Mayo

Mason Mount joins Ruben Loftus-Cheek as the two players reintroduced to Chelsea’s line-up today, replacing Jorginho and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

That suggests a 3-4-3 from Graham Potter, with Christian Pulisic or Raheem Sterling on the left of the midfield four and Loftus-Cheek on the right.

Two changes for Brighton

14:13 , Marc Mayo

Pervis Estupinan and Kaoru Mitoma make the XI for the hosts, Joel Veltman and Danny Welbeck dropping out.

It is not immediately clear whether Brighton will set up with their usual three-man backline, given the lack of a third natural centre-back.

How Brighton line up

14:07 , Marc Mayo

Brighton XI: Sanchez, Mitoma, Webster, Dunk, Estupinan, March, Caicedo, Lallana, Gross, Trossard, Mac Allister.

Subs: Steele, Lamptey, Sarmiento, Enciso, Undav, Gilmour, Turns, Furlong, Moran.

How Chelsea line up

Score prediction

13:43 , Alex Young

This game has thrown up its fair share of draws of late, but I’m backing Potter to get one over on his old team. Brighton are struggling to assert themselves in the same way they did under their ex-boss, while Chelsea - who aren’t exactly firing on all cylinders themselves - should be at an advantage to exploit Brighton’s profligacy.

Confirmed team news to come in just over half an hour.

Kovacic passed fit

13:16 , Alex Young

Chelsea remain without Kalidou Koulibaly this afternoon but have been boosted by Mateo Kovacic's fitness for the trip to face Brighton.

Longer-term absentees Reece James, N'Golo Kante and Wesley Fofana all remain on the sidelines until after the World Cup.

Manager Graham Potter has been known to switch formations from match to match and even during games, so both a back four and back three are possible.
