Bristol City have confirmed that Fally Mayulu has departed Ashton Gate on loan for the remainder of the season, with the forward joining Sturm Graz on a temporary basis.

The 22-year-old joined the Robins in a deal understood to be worth up to £2.5million during the summer transfer window and made an immediate impression in City colours.

After a mixed pre-season, Mayulu scored off of the bench in the Reds' opening day draw with Hull City at the MKM Stadium and followed that up in his first league outing at Ashton Gate when he scored his second in as many games in the Robins' 4-3 win over Millwall.

The Frenchman's first league start saw him substituted at half-time as Liam Manning's side were beaten 3-0 by Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park in September and he would have to wait until December to start another Championship game.

Manning gave the former Rapid Vienna striker the nod in several games over the festive period, including City's FA Cup defeat to Wolves. When Mayulu was replaced in the second half of that match, sections of the Ashton Gate crowd cheered the change having been frustrated with his performance.

Since the clash with Wolves, the 22-year-old has been absent from each of City's last three matchday squads, including Saturday's 2-1 win over Blackburn Rovers. Reports emerged suggesting Stoke City had submitted a £2.5million bid for the forward and while Bristol Live understands the Potters held an interest in Mayulu, no bid of that value is believed to have been received this month.

Rather than completing a permanent move away from Ashton Gate this month, the striker will instead return to Austria for the second half of the season, in what is understood to be a straight loan deal. Sturm Graz currently top the Austrian Bundesliga and are competing in the Champions League this season, although their campaign is set to come to an end following Wednesday night's clash with RB Leipzig.

Discussing Mayulu's move, Manning said: "This is a move that is best for Fally and the club, which is the most important thing. He is going to get game time to continue his development and we will continue to monitor him. We wish him all the very best for the rest of the season."

The 22-year-old put pen to paper on a four-year contract when he joined Bristol City this summer and it remains to be seen what his future holds beyond the end of the season and his loan spell on the continent.
