Cheltenham Town are set to sign attacking midfielder Tommy Backwell from Bristol City, Gloucestershire Live understands.

The 21-year-old has been on trial with Michael Flynn's squad with a view to earning a contract and he is now poised to become the club's second permanent addition of the January transfer window.

Backwell took part in an 11 v 11 training match held at Bishop's Cleeve's Kayte Lane ground last week and has impressed sufficiently to earn a contract.

He signed his first professional deal with Bristol City in May 2022, agreeing a one-year extension last summer.

Although he is yet to make a competitive appearance for the Ashton Gate club, Backwell has been named among the substitutes in both the FA Cup and Championship, while remaining a regular for their Under-21s.

He has been with City since the age of 15 after spells in youth football at Mangotsfield United and Southampton.

Backwell has senior experience in non-league football from youth loans with Hallen and Yate Town, along with a brief spell at National League South club Bath City.

Cheltenham's other permanent addition this month is right-back Darragh Power from Waterford FC.

The League Two club have also signed Brentford pair Ashley Hay and Val Adedokun on loan until the end of the season.

All three January acquisitions featured in Tuesday night's 2-1 Vertu Trophy third round win over Colchester United.

As well as Backwell's imminent arrival on a contract, Cheltenham are also close to agreeing two more loan signings.

They travel to Harrogate Town on Friday night (7.45pm).
